Avoidance. If the couerl is subjected to an effect that allows it to make a saving throw to take only half damage, it instead takes no damage if it succeeds on the saving throw, and only half damage if it fails.

Displacement. The couerl projects a magical illusion that makes it appear to be standing near its actual location, causing attack rolls against it to have disadvantage. If it is hit by an attack, this trait is disrupted until the end of its next turn. This trait is also disrupted while the couerl is incapacitated or has a speed of 0. The couerl can still use this ability even when ethereal.

Mimicry. The couerl can mimic animal sounds and humanoid voices. A creature that hears the sounds can tell they are imitations with a successful DC 13 Wisdom (Insight) check.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The couerl makes two attacks: one with its bite or paralyzing tentacle and one with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d12 + 5) piercing damage and the target is grappled (escape DC 15). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the couerl can't bite another target.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d10 + 5) slashing damage.

Paralyzing Tentacle. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d10 + 5) piercing damage and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. Until the poison ends the target is paralyzed. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the poison on itself on a success.

Teleport (Recharge 4–6). The couerl magically teleports, along with any equipment it is wearing or carrying, up to 40 feet to an unoccupied space it can see. Before or after teleporting, the couerl can make one claw attack.

BONUS ACTIONS

Ethereal Jaunt. The couerl magically shifts from the Material Plane to the Ethereal Plane, or vice versa.


The cthonian couerl is a strange beast said to be related to the six legged kirre or the displacer beast but in many ways has surpassed them both. They are a formidable and swift moving skirmisher on the battlefield able to use both illusionary duplicates and the power of teleportation to get away from mighty enemies while stalking their weaker quarry. What people know of these three eyed felines is that they have a tendency to haunt planar and lunar gates especially during the night or in the subterranean realms.
