Deathly Body. The corpse gatherer cannot be slain by instant death effects, is not effected by spells effects that cause hit point reduction and is not affected by Revivify, Raise Dead, Resurrection, True Resurrection or similar spell effect.

Sturdy. The corpse gatherer does not take extra damage from critical hits.

Savage Attacker. The corpse gatherer can reroll damage dice and take the higher of the 2 rolled.

Critical Blows. The corpse gatherer scores a critical hit on rolling a 19 or 20 when making an attack.

Cleaver. When a corpse gatherer kills a creature or reduces it to 0 hit points, it can make one additional Slam attack against a creature within reach.

Desanctifying Aura. The corpse gatherer has a 100-foot radius aura centered on itself that cannot be affected by an antimagic field or dispel magic. Undead within this aura have advantage on saving throws against turning. Undead within this aura have +2 to attack rolls, +2 to saving throws and +2 necrotic damage on hit (included in the attack). Undead creatures created within and the corpse gatherer have a +2 hit points per hit die (included in the hit points). This aura stays in effect for 24 hours after the corpse gatherer passes through an area or dies.

Soul Binding. Creatures that are slain and ingested by the corpse gatherer cannot be resurrected. Killing the corpse gatherer negates this effect against affected creatures. Creatures ingested but not slain by the corpse gatherer are not affected by this feature.

Zombie Spawn. Upon reaching 0 hit points, an amount of medium sized zombies equal to the amount of hit dice of the corpse gatherer spawn within the Desanctifying aura and act on the corpse gatherer's initiative. While within the aura, the zombies function as normal but when they are not within the aura they are normal corpses. These zombies are spawned under the effect of the Desanctifying Aura feature giving them 6 more hit points.

Magic Resistance. The corpse gatherer has advantage on saving throws against magic and magic effects.

Magic Attacks. The corpse gatherers' attacks are considered magical.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The corpse gatherer makes three slam attacks. Alternatively, the corpse gatherer can use its Swallow in place of one of its slam attacks.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack. +18 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (2d12 + 10) bludgeoning damage and 2 necrotic damage. If the target of this attack is a creature, it is grappled (escape DC 24). Until the grapple ends, the target is restrained and takes 2d12 + 10 bludgeoning damage and 2 necrotic damage at the start of its turn.

Ingest Corpses. The corpse gatherer grabs up to 4 corpses within reach and regains 5 hit points per corpse. It can go above its hit point maximum using this action, gaining any excess as temporary hit points. Swallowed creatures are not subject to ingestion until the round after they have died.

Swallow. The corpse gatherer can swallow a creature that is at least 1 size category smaller than itself by making a successful grapple check (DC 24). If the target is already grappled by the corpse gatherer, it does not need to make the grapple check. Instead the target takes damage from a slam attack and is put inside the corpse gatherer. The corpse gatherer does not need to use its mouth to swallow; it can merely stuff the creature into any convenient portion of its porous body. Once inside the corpse gatherer, the creature takes 1d12 + 10 bludgeoning damage each round from the roiling corpses, gravestones and other objects within. A successful grapple check (DC 24) allows the creature to extract themselves from the hands of corpses within the corpse gatherer and return to the surface, where another successful grapple check (DC 24) is needed to get free. Alternatively, a creature can use weapons that do piercing or slashing damage to cut their way out. Dealing at least 25 points of damage in this way permits escape. Once a single swallowed creature escapes, the hole that was made fills thus another creature will have to cut its own way out. The corpse gatherer can swallow as many as 2 Huge, 8 Large, 32 Medium, or 128 Small or smaller creatures.

Variant: Dark Heart

A corpse gatherer with a Dark Heart, an enchanted onyx, deals an additional 2d6 necrotic damage on hit with a Slam attack, to creatures it has restrained and creatures that are swallowed. In addition, when a corpse gatherer dies with a Dark Heart, it can reform itself into smaller version of itself using the Dark Heart to bring itself back together after the Zombie Spawn feature has been used. With this variant feature applied to a corpse gatherer, it ignores the Deathly Body feature preventing resurrection. A corpse gatherer with this feature is CR 22 (41,000). If there are at least 30 Zombies within a 100ft radius of the Dark Heart at the start of their turn, and the Dark Heart has not been dispelled (DC 18) or under the effect of an antimagic field, it reforms a Gargantuan corpse gatherer.

If there is at least 20 Zombies at the start of their turn within a 100ft radius of the Dark Heart, and the Dark Heart has not been dispelled (DC 18) or under the effect of an antimagic field, it reforms a Huge corpse gatherer. A Huge corpse gatherer deals 2d10 bludgeoning damage when making a Slam attack, on restrained targets and 1d10 bludgeoning damage to creatures being swallowed. It can only swallow half of the amount of creatures a Gargantuan corpse gatherer can hold with the exception of Huge creatures as it cannot hold any. The corpse gatherer can now swallow 4 Large, 16 Medium, or 64 Small or smaller creatures. The Huge corpse gatherer has 312 hit points, +15 to hit, +8 to damage from Strength, reach 15, a DC 22 grapple and an AC of 18. Otherwise it retains the same features and actions as a Gargantuan corpse gatherer.

If there is at least 10 Zombies at the start of their turn within a 100ft radius of the Dark Heart, and the Dark Heart has not been dispelled (DC 18) or under the effect of an antimagic field, it reforms a Large corpse gatherer. A Large corpse gatherer deals 2d8 bludgeoning damage when making a Slam attack, on restrained targets and 1d8 bludgeoning damage to creatures being swallowed. It can only swallow half of the amount of creatures a Huge corpse gatherer can hold with the exception of Large creatures as it cannot hold any. The corpse gatherer can now swallowed 8 Medium, 16 Small or smaller creatures. The Large corpse gatherer has 230 hit points, +12 to hit, +6 to damage from Strength, reach 10ft, a DC 20 grapple and an AC of 16. Otherwise it retains the same features and actions as a Gargantuan corpse gatherer.

If there is less than 10 Zombies at the start of their turn within a 100ft radius of the Dark Heart, and the Dark Heart has not been dispelled (DC 18) or under the effect of an antimagic field, it does not reform a corpse gatherer and they are only zombies that under the effect of the Desanctifying Aura feature.

The onyx, when dispelled, is worth 5000 gold. However, if the onyx is not dispelled and it is around at least 10 to 30 (in increments of 10) Zombies it will reform a corpse gatherer or corpse gatherer variant. The schools this item projects are necromancy and transmutation.
