Chosen of Lolth[edit]

Those wretched few corrupted by the sinister touch of the Spider Queen are known as the Chosen of Lolth. Chosen of Lolth undergo a transformation that both provides them power and changes them in ways they may not necessarily want.

Making a Chosen of Lolth[edit]

The Chosen develop skills to infiltrate secret places and reach impossible places. She uses her claws and bite to savage her foes.

Abilities: Most of the Chosen's abilities are based on Strength and Constitution.

Races: All races can become a Chosen of Lolth, but Drow and Human are most likely.

Alignment: Cannot be Lawful or Good.

Class Features[edit]

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A Chosen is largely dependent on her claws and thus, is only proficient with simple weapons. Chosen are not proficient with any armor or shields, as they value range of movement above all else. When wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load, a Chosen loses her AC bonus, as well as her fast movement, and many of her other abilities.

Arachnid Metamorphosis: With each Chosen of Lolth level she attains, the Chosen’s body undergoes a metamorphosis, gaining arachnidian qualities. She gains the Augmented subtype. These spiderlike features do not alter the Chosen’s charisma score or interpersonal skills, but the DM may choose to impose a circumstance penalty or bonus on any checks involving interaction with creatures that find such changes frightening or appealing.

Exoskeleton (Ex): When unarmored and unencumbered, the Chosen adds her Constitution bonus (if any) to her AC and gains half her Constitution bonus as DR/—. These bonuses increase by 1 for every three Chosen levels. The bonus to AC applies even against touch attacks or when the Chosen is flat-footed. She loses these bonuses when she wears any armor or when she carries a shield. The Chosen's Exoskeleton improves at 5th level, allowing her to resist magical and unusual attacks with great willpower or fortitude. She gains the benefits of Mettle while she is not helpless and spell resistance equal to 15 + HD + her Exoskeleton Bonus.

Spider Claw (Ex): A Chosen’s hands are tipped with vicious claws. At 1st level, the claws deal 1d8 damage. Her claws gain a critical threat range of 19-20 at 3rd level from Natural Attack Devotion and increase as with her other natural attacks. Because of the unnatural physiology of her hands, the Chosen takes a -10 penalty if she attacks a creature with manufactured weapons in melee. The Chosen is always considered armed, even when she does not wield a weapon. She gains the Improved Unarmed Strike feat. Usually a Chosen’s claw attacks deal lethal damage, but she can choose to deal nonlethal damage instead with no penalty on her attack roll. A Chosen also deals more damage with her claws as her metamorphosis progresses, as shown on Table: The Chosen of Lolth. At 5th level, the Chosen gains her choice between the Rend special ability or the Multiattack feat. The Chosen may concentrate for an hour to change which benefit she gains.

Natural Attack Devotion (Su): At the start of each day, a Chosen can apply a number of enhancement bonuses and/or special abilities to each of her natural attacks. The weapon bonus the Chosen can add to each of her natural attacks using this supernatural ability increases by 1 for every three Chosen levels, as listed on Table: The Chosen of Lolth. Natural attacks of the same type must have the same enhancements, but attacks of differing types may have different enhancements. These bonuses and abilities reset at the end of each day and are applied on top of whatever bonuses the Chosen’s natural attacks may already have. With each point of Natural Attack Devotion the Chosen gains, the critical threat range of her natural attacks increases by +1, to a maximum of +3 at 9th level and she gains a profane bonus to attack. This ability stacks with effects that double critical threat range such as the Improved Critical feat and the Keen weapon enhancement, but a natural attack's threat range may not be doubled more than once. The Chosen may score critical hits against creatures that are not subject to critical hits or bear some other resistance or immunity, but she takes a -4 penalty to confirm critical hits against such creatures. She gains the Improved Grapple feat and Weapon Focus with each of her natural attacks.

Track: A Chosen gains Track as a bonus feat at 1st level.

Spider Vision (Ex): At 1st level, a Chosen grows additional eyes to a total of eight. The Chosen gains Darkvision out to a range of 60 feet if she does not already have it and is able to see through magical darkness. She is immune to gaze attacks and effects that rely on vision. In addition, she gains a +4 racial bonus on Spot checks and a +2 bonus to intimidate creatures who look upon her visage.

Improved Scent (Ex): A 2nd level Chosen develops an improved version of the Scent extraordinary ability. A Chosen’s range increments for detecting scents are double that of the regular scent ability. In addition, she gains a +4 racial bonus on Survival checks to track.

Spider Climb (Ex): At 2nd level, Chosen gain the benefits of Spider Climb. Spider climbing speed is the same as normal movement speed. A Chosen can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened. In addition, the chosen gains a +4 racial bonus on Climb and Jump checks.

Unarmored Speed Bonus (Ex): A Chosen gains a +10 bonus to her base land speed at 3rd level. This bonus increases every two Chosen levels, as shown on Table: The Chosen of Lolth. A Chosen in armor or carrying a medium or heavy load loses this extra speed.

Spider Bite (Ex): Beginning at 3rd level, a Chosen can unhinge her jaw and bite as an attack action. If she uses a full attack action, she can use her bite as a secondary attack at the standard -5 penalty. Her bite is a natural attack that deals 1d6 points of acid damage (instead of a bite’s regular damage). Use the Chosen’s Constitution bonus instead of Strength when calculating acid damage. The bite also injects a poison that deals 1d2/1d2 Constitution damage. Both the initial poison and secondary poison damage can be negated by a fortitude save, DC 10 + 1/2 Chosen class level + Chosen’s Con bonus. The damage die for the Chosen's acid and Constitution damage is increased by 1 size increment with every five Chosen levels attained.

Vile Adaptation (Ex): At 3rd level, a Chosen’s metamorphosis grants her immunity to poisons and diseases of all kinds and immunity to vile damage. Furthermore, effects that would cause the Chosen to become nauseated instead sicken the Chosen. Effects that sicken the Chosen by default have no effect.

Vile Blood (Ex): The Chosen grows much more fortuitous at 4th level. She gains the Toughness feat and 1 point of Regeneration, negated by acid damage.

Pounce (Ex): Chosen gain the benefit of the Pounce extraordinary ability at 4th level.

Evasion (Ex): At 4th level or higher if a Chosen makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if a Chosen is wearing no armor. A helpless Chosen does not gain the benefit of evasion. At 9th level, this ability becomes Improved Evasion. The chosen still takes no damage on a successful Reflex saving throw against attacks, but henceforth she takes only half damage on a failed save. A helpless Chosen does not gain the benefit of this ability.

Spider Ability Bonus (Ex): Starting at 5th level, a Chosen gains a +2 bonus to a specific ability score every five levels as a benefit of her metamorphosis.

Spider Skill Bonus (Ex): Starting at 5th level, a Chosen gains a +2 bonus to Hide, Move Silently, Spot, Listen, and Intimidate checks every five levels as a benefit of her metamorphosis. One skill of her choice gains an additional +2.

Aberrant (Ex): The Chosen's acceptance of the dark and bizarre causes her form to become strange and twisted at 6th level. The Chosen gains an aberrant feat of her choice that she meets the prerequisites for. Henceforth, when she would choose a character feat, she also gains an additional aberrant feat.

Spider Web (Ex): At 6th level, the Chosen’s metamorphosis progresses, enabling her to produce silky webbing from spinnerets which form in the palms of her hands. Referred to hereafter as webbing, the Chosen’s silk has three times her level in hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 5 + 1/2 her level + the Chosen’s Con bonus. She can produce an amount of webbing each day equal to 15x (her Con modifier + her level). This resulting number is the maximum feet of webbing producible each day. The webbing, when in use, is only sticky in places where the Chosen wants it to be (e.g. one end only, for sticking to a ceiling). The Chosen is unimpeded by webbing and can dissolve any length of her webbing into nothing with a touch. Webbing can be used for any number of purposes - rope for climbing, binding enemies, or crafting traps, just to name a few. Creating web with additional inches of thickness doubles the amount of webbing expended with each increment (a ten foot web rope that is two inches thick requires twenty feet of webbing; a ten foot web rope that is three inches thick requires forty feet of webbing). She gains a racial bonus on Use Rope and Weaving (craft) checks equal to her level. She gains this same bonus with any skill checks relating to her webbing.

Discharge Web (Ex) As a standard action, the Chosen can discharge webbing for various purposes. This can be used to affix one end of a web to an object some distance away, or it can be used as a melee or ranged touch attack to bind the target. Web attacks deal no damage, provoke no attacks of opportunity, and use the same attack bonuses and critical threat range as the Chosen’s claw attacks. When used at range, the web attack has a projectile increment of 60ft. To bind an enemy, the Chosen must expend an amount of webbing and succeed on a ranged or melee touch attack. Medium and smaller creatures require 5 feet of webbing to bind. The base amount of webbing required to bind a creature increases by 5 for every size category above medium, or modify this for differing purposes. On a successful hit, the enemy must make a reflex save, DC 10 + 1/2 level + her Con bonus. This DC increases by 1 with each additional inch of thickness. On a failed save, the enemy is bound by sticky webbing that weaves around their form. Bound enemies are immobilized and only capable of taking mental actions. Bound targets can free themselves by spending 1 round and making a Strength check at the same DC or an Escape Artist check at DC + 5. Cutting or destroying the webbing can also free a victim.

Chosen Authority (Ex): A Chosen gains an affinity for manipulating certain creatures. At 6th level, she gains the skill Chosen Authority, which can be rolled in place of Diplomacy or Intimidate when interacting with applicable creatures. This ability can be used on all drow, vermin, spiderkind, arthropods, and any other thematically applicable creatures. The Chosen rolls 1d20 and adds her Charisma modifier, plus ranks in the skill, and twice her level to determine the Chosen Authority check result. Creatures that can be influenced by this ability act as if their default attitude towards her is indifferent or friendly unless otherwise influenced. Mindless creatures (such as vermin) are treated as having an intelligence score of 2 for the purposes of interacting with the her. Additionally, she gains a bonus equal to her level on Sense Motive checks against creatures subject to Chosen Authority.

Hide in Plain Sight (Ex): Beginning at 7th level, as long as you are within 10 feet of some sort of a shadow, you can use the Hide skill even when being observed.

Awareness (Ex): At 7th level, the Chosen's heightened senses give her an extraordinary amount of insight into the world around her. The Chosen gains Blindsight out to 30ft and the range of her Darkvision doubles.

Trapfinding (Ex): A Chosen gains the ability to locate traps at 8th level. She can use the Search skill to locate traps with a DC higher than 20, and she can use Disable Device to bypass a trap or disarm magic traps. See the rogue class feature, page 50 of the Player's Handbook.

Uncanny Reflex (Ex): At 8th level, a Chosen is able to bolster her reflexes, so as to respond to perils with preternatural speed. This enhancement comes at the cost of slowing down to focus on potential dangers. At the start of her turn, the Chosen may choose to reduce her land speed in to gain a bonus to reflex saves. For every 5ft her land speed is reduced, she gains a +1 bonus on reflex saves. The penalty to speed and bonus on saves applies until her next turn. The Chosen may not reduce her land speed to more than half using this ability.

Vile Attacks (Su): At 8th level, the Chosen learns to savage foes with her claws in a manner that eclipses even the deepest expressions of evil. For the duration of this ability, the Chosen's claw attacks deal 1/2 her Constitution modifier as additional damage in the form of vile damage. Vile damage is not subject to damage reduction and can only be healed under special circumstances. The Chosen is invigorated by the torment inflicted with each successful strike; she recovers hit points equal to the amount of vile damage dealt with each claw attack. This ability can used once per day for every two levels the Chosen possesses and lasts for a maximum amount of rounds per day equal to the Chosen’s level. Activating this ability requires a swift action.

Extra Arms (Ex): The Chosen’s metamorphosis has become truly grotesque at 9th level; she grows two more arms which emerge from her back or the sides of her torso and are fully retractable. Extending or retracting the new limbs is a move-equivalent action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. The new pair of arms have the same capabilities as her preexisting pair and allow the Chosen to function as one size category larger when subject to size modifiers if doing so is advantageous to her, as with Powerful Build. Also, a Chosen is considered quadrupedal when calculating carrying capacity.

Warped Mind (Ex): At 11th level, the Chosen reaches a stage of her metamorphosis where she begins to experience psychological changes. The structure of her brain is fundamentally altered, making her resistant to mental manipulations, but also causing her to adopt a more bestial way of thinking. The Chosen becomes immune to mind-influencing effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects) and gains a +2 bonus to will saves.

Shadowstalker (Ex): The Chosen has learned to constantly conceal her presence at 11th level. When she hides, creatures with blindsense, blindsight, scent, or tremorsense must make a Listen check or a Spot check (whichever DC is higher) to notice her, just as sighted creatures would make Spot checks to detect her. In addition, a Chosen can move her full speed without taking a penalty on her Hide and Move Silently check.

Transient Power (Sp): The Chosen is able to temporarily tap into a well of divine power at 12th level. For a limited number of times per day, she is able to produce spells as spell-like abilities. Harnessing divine power, even for such a short period of time, is extremely taxing for the Chosen. After using this ability, she must make a fortitude save at the same DC as the spell she produced. On a failed save, the Chosen is fatigued for the rest of the encounter. This limitation fades at 20th level. She chooses three domains from the following list: Chaos, Darkness, Demonic, Destiny, Destruction, Drow, Envy, Evil, Lust, Pride, Shadow, Spider, Trickery, and Wrath. Each domain gives the Chosen access to a list of spells. She gains the benefit of two granted powers from her domains which must be decided at the start of each day.

When she gains this ability, she is able to use two spells per day from her domain lists. This limit increases by one for every Chosen of Lolth levels she attains afterward. The maximum level of spell she can use is equivalent to a cleric of the same level. As spell-like abilities, spells replicated using this method do not require verbal, somatic, or material components, nor do they require a focus or have an XP cost. The Chosen’s class level is used as her caster level and the DC (if any) for spells reproduced with this ability is 15 + the level of the spell + 1/2 the Chosen’s class level.

Vile Apotheosis (Ex): At 13th level, the spark of Divinity sown in the Chosen has been realized. Her type changes to outsider (native). As a native outsider, she can still be raised, reincarnated, or resurrected just as other living creatures can be. Unlike most native outsiders, she does not need to sleep, but must still eat and breathe.

Skill Mastery (Ex): The Chosen becomes so certain in the use of certain skills at 13th level that she can use them reliably even under adverse conditions. Upon gaining this ability, she selects a number of skills equal to 3 + her Intelligence modifier. When making a skill check with one of these skills, she may take 10 even if stress and distractions would normally prevent her from doing so.

Improved Multiattack (Ex): The Chosen has grown adept with wielding her additional natural attacks with terrifying efficiency at 14th level. She gains the benefits of the Improved Multiattack feat.

Vermin Growth (Su): At 16th level, a Chosen can increase the size of vermin, as with Giant Vermin. The Chosen’s class level is used in place of caster level. This supernatural ability can be used 2 times per day for each Chosen level she attains thereafter and is dismissible. At 20th level, the Chosen counts as vermin for the purposes of this ability.

Morphic Limbs (Ex): A Chosen of 18th level or higher can suddenly unhinge her joints and stretch her limbs, neck, or other appendages outward. The Chosen's natural attacks count as reach weapons (as the spiked chain). Furthermore, creatures in the Chosen’s reach attempting to tumble take a penalty on the check equal to the Chosen’s claw attack bonus.

Extra Arms (Ex): At level 19, she grows another set of arms (+4 total arms), doubling the effects given by the previous new pair of arms.

Abomination (Ex): At level 20, the Chosen of Lolth’s Metamorphosis is complete. She has been transformed into a true monstrosity, a grotesque being entirely different from the entity she once was. Guided by Lolth's hand, the Chosen has reached great heights and perhaps grown beyond the Spider Queen's influence. The Chosen becomes an Abomination. She gains the Abomination traits as listed in their entry and divine rank 0.
