Chitine[edit]

Chitine were once human, but were transformed by a dark ritual into a race of spider-like, four-armed humanoids as a result of inhuman experiments on slaves. They were mistakes made by the drow house of Ched Nasadan, who sought to perfect the union of spiders and humanoids as tributes to Lolth. These failures were enslaved subsequently, and underwent brutal treatment by their drow masters. It is not until the choldriths rose among them that they gained the will to overthrow and murder many of their drow oppressors. Many chitine fled from drow cities, and have spread through the Underdark, making their own dark nests where they live under a choldrith leader. Though free, they have largely remained true to the values of chaos and evil imposed upon them by their former drow masters and worship Lolth.

Play a chitine if you want...

  • To be a hybrid spider humanoid creature.
  • To play a creature with a dark and tragic origin.
  • To be a member of a race that favors the rogue, fighter and ranger classes.

Physical Qualities[edit]

The chitine are creatures resembling multi-limbed humanoids, much like a spider. They average at about 4 feet tall, slightly shorter than humans, and four arms, which all bear an extra joint like an arthropod limb. Their feet and hands are equipped with claws for climbing surfaces, as well as grasping prey. Their palms and feet are also covered with a substance, the same of which allows spiders to remain free from being tangled or stuck in their own webs. A chitine face has four pairs of faceted eyes, and mandibles attached to their mouth. Their bodies are generally slightly hairy, much like a tarantula. Rather than external spinnerets in the abdomen, chitine have organs to create their webs in their stomachs, which they expel through their mouths.

Chitine Society[edit]

Within the labyrinthine caverns of the Underdark, the chitine live sequestered away from other races. These mazes are their villages, often laced with intricate webs that serve as both traps for outsiders, posts for scouts, and housing for hatch sites. Individual cocoons serve as housing for chitine. In the center of the caverns, where all tunnels lead, is usually a temple dedicated to the spider goddess Lolth. The chitine pray daily to her, making sacrifices of prey they have caught. In the temple is also where the choldrith leader is housed and fiercely protected. These bloated spider creatures are seen as blessed by Lolth, and by protecting them, the chitine believe they too receive her blessing. The whole of their society see the Underdark as a home they cannot leave, though they may be surrounded by enemies.

Playing A Chitine[edit]

Chitine Characteristics: Tragic, maddened, volatile, raging, lost, regretful

Male Names: Awa, Caullum, Cyten, Garlome, Kawa, Nullum, Vald

Female Names: Caulwen, Garwen, Neulwen, Qid, Qod, Uelwen

Chitine are creatures that have endured a great deal of abuse, before and after their transformations into these monstrosities. Despite their successful uprising, the chitine remain fearful for their lives, as many drow now see them as a threat to be eradicated from the Underdark. Chitine commonly look to their leader choldriths for help, as they believe them to be true priestesses to Lolth and her brood. They even struck a deal with driders for protection and retaliation against drow cities, laying waste to a few of them. Chitine are thus able soldiers, and very eager to defend their choldrith priests. This often can mean they fight a bit mindlessly, as they are under the ill effects of the spider goddess' influence. Some recall their true selves in horrid nightmares and go mad, while others leave their web-woven villages and flee to where they will not be hunted, searching for peace and reconciliation. Few ever have achieved this goal.

Chitine Adventurers[edit]

Chitine favor the fighter, rogue and ranger classes. Three sample chitine adventurers are described below.

Awa is a chitine ranger who is tasked with keeping vigilant watch over a tunnel that goes to the heart of his village. He is plagued by doubt from killing so many people who wander into his webs, seeing they wear clothes and armor that arouses odd memories in him. He keeps this to himself, suffering in silence and fear of Lolth. One day, he hopes to find where these people come from, and maybe recover something about his past life.

Kaull is a chitine fighter who is his village choldrith's personal bodyguard. The choldrith bestows upon him a vision and mission from the spider queen herself, telling him he must go and sow seeds of subversion against those who live above. Loyal to his goddess and priest, Kaull prepares to set out to the World Above to fulfill his duty.

Qod is a chitine rogue that had left the Underdark behind, barely having escaped with her life years ago. She still feels the tug of Lolth's influence on her mind, and knows that it is possible her followers may find and kill her. Thus she is often on the run, looking for the means which will free her people from the spider queen, and grant her some recourse.
