Chiroptera (3.5e Race)

Chiroptera[edit]
Personality[edit]
Each Chiropteran is different in terms of general personality. Chiroptera spend many nights dancing and singing in celebration of their deity, Noctis, and other occasions such as marriage, birthdays, and even for no reason at all. They are generally very happy and friendly. Though this varies from Chiropteran to Chiropteran. Chiroptera usually stay in colonies, but it isn't rare for some to live solitary or even travel. They like to collect shiny things.
Physical Description[edit]
There are 2 main types of Chiroptera: Mega and Micro. Mega Chiroptera stand from 5”5’ to 7”0’ and weigh from 100 to 140 lbs; While Micro Chiroptera stand from 2”5’ to 5”0’ and weigh from 50 to 90 lbs. There are 3 sub types of Chiroptera: Frugivore, Hematavore, and Insectivore.
They are covered in fur that ranges in color from soft tan to black. In place of arms they have wings with soft membrane covering each finger of the wing leaving only the thumb free. Males tend to be larger than females, but this is not always true. Chiroptera live up to 925 years old. Their eyes are luminescent, though Frugivores are much duller in luminescence because they have no trouble seeing in the day. Their eye color is a range of yellows, reds, greens, and blues. Their wingspan is relative to their height. Their ears depend on type of Chiroptera. Frugivores ears are short and pointed like a foxes; Hematavores are open at the front and pointed; Insectivores ears are the most diverse, they can be small and rounded, very large and pointed, or medium height and either pointed or rounded. The noses also vary from type to type. Frugivores have a longer muzzle with an almost dog like nose, Hematavores muzzles are short and their nose smushed, and Insectivores muzzles are short with similar noses to the Frugivore. Their teeth are all different as well. Frugivores teeth are sharp but have 2 long canines to help dig into harder fruits. Hematavores teeth are a bit strange; Like the Frugivore they have sharp teeth with 2 long canines, but their top front 2 teeth are long and resemble a rats teeth only sharper. Insectivores teeth are very sharp, they have 2 canines that are slightly longer than the rest of their teeth and the top front teeth are smaller than the rest. The feet of a Chiroptera are long toed and clawed so that they can both attack their enemies and hang from their roosts. Tails vary from Chiropteran to Chiropteran.
Frugivore[edit]
Frugivores have sharp eyesight and have no trouble seeing in the daylight or at night. Their sense of smell is also very strong, though due to small ears their hearing isn’t that great. They are the only Mega Chiroptera. They are not fast flyers, though their wingspan is large, thus they eat mostly fruit, but can also eat vegetables and small amounts of cooked meat. They hunt food using sight and smell. They forage from the air as well as on the ground. They do not use Echolocation.
Hematavore[edit]
Hematavores have good eyesight and even better senses of smell and hearing. They have trouble seeing in the daylight, though their day vision can get better through exposure. They are Micro Chiroptera, though their height and weight ranges are on the higher numbers. The feed off living creatures, thus their diet consists of blood and raw meat. They use both their vision and echolocation to find food. They have medium length wings and are neither fast nor are they particularly agile flyers.
Insectivore[edit]
Insectivores vision isn’t great, they are short sighted and have trouble seeing in daylight. They use echolocation and can eventually have better day vision through exposure. Their senses of hearing and smell are strong, though hearing is much stronger then smell and vision. They are Micro Chiroptera and their height and weight ranges are on the lower numbers. Their wing ranges from small to medium. They are fast and agile flyers. They use their speed, agility, and echolocation to capture large moths and other large flying insects, while they use their smell, echolocation, and sight to find large insects on the ground. Their diet is mostly insects but they are also able to consume small amounts of cooked meat.
Relations[edit]
They are rather friendly with most races. Get along best with cave and tunnel dwellers like Dwarves, Driders, and Drow. They are rather cautious of predator races such as: Nagas, and any wildcat or predator bird anthro races. They like to collect into colonies. They share duties through the colony and are generally very kind to each other. It’s not surprising to see Frugivores, Hematavores, and Insectivores all mixed into a colony. They do not have any issue with mixing this way.
Alignment[edit]
This all depends on the Chiropteran. Most tend to lean towards Lawful Good.
Lands[edit]
They prefer to roost in dark and dry places, like caves, though some will carve a place from large trees or build a home. They enjoy being in colonies.
Religion[edit]
Chiroptera worship Noctis. She is the goddess of night and forgiveness. She is a Lawful Good deity. She will not work with anyone who is Chaotic Evil, for their actions are for no purpose other than to cause pain and suffering. These people do not seek forgiveness.
Origin Story[edit]
She is the reason there is night. Having had her eyes burnt left her nearly blind in the days light. Night was a gift to her from Lucem, the God of light, because he loved her dearly. Though he may have been a rat and her a raven they laid together in excitement of the gift that he had given and she conceived. Lucem’s sister Invidia became very jealous for she loved her brother like a lover and he had once loved her as well. In her jealousy she held Noctis down and ripped her feathers from her wings. When Lucem learned of his sister’s treachery, he vowed to execute her. Noctis held him close and told him to forgive her of her actions as they were done out of jealousy and sadness. He executed her anyway. He came and begged at Noctis’ feet for forgiveness. Of course she forgave him. When it was time for her to give birth she celebrated. She cawed loudly and happily, so much so that her happiness collected in balls of beautiful light and joined the night sky. She gave birth to thousands upon thousands of children. When she finally looked at them she was horrified. They had the body of a rat, though this wasn’t what horrified her, and wings made of thin skin stretched over 4 long bones with a bone sticking out of the top of the wing. They were featherless. They too had to bear featherless wings, and she was enraged. She wanted nothing more than to have Invidia’s blood on her hands, to raise her from the death and kill her again, but her rage was distracted when she watched her children fly. They could still fly without their feathers. She wept with joy. She grabbed her lover and spread her wings, and by her will she flew. She placed herself in her beloved night to watch over her children, and her lover joined in by her side to watch over them in the day. They rejoin 4 times a year to watch their children and to make love and bless the world with more of her children.
