Chameleods are a mysterious race of reptilian humanoids distantly related to lizardfolk. They are believed to be one of the creations from the Age of Thunder by the sarrukh creator race, though lesser than the yuan-ti and lizardfolk in number. After the fall of the yuan-ti empire, the chameleod numbers burgeoned until the Age of Man, after which they stabilized. Today, they dwell in forested jungles like that of Chult, where they have made a name for themselves as crafty hidden spies, thieves and assassins.
Play a Chameleod if you want...
- To look like a chameleon.
- To be able to stick your tongue at people.
- To be a member of a race that favors the Rogue, Ranger, and Monk classes.
Physical Qualities[edit]
The chameleod look like slender lizardfolk who have chameleon traits. They tend to be slender, taller, and more humanoid. They have special eyes that are able to look in two directions at once, independent of the other, and a crest on their head. Instead of skin, they have scales, usually with a color unique to their dwelling. If they live in a green forest, they will be green, for example. This can shift based on their mood. Some adept chameleods can even use this to their advantage as camouflage with their surroundings. They have tails that are usually curled out coming out behind their tailbone. Their tongues are long and elastic, able to slobber enemies and prey in a sticky mucus-like saliva. The rest of their body is fairly humanoid, save their three-toed feet maybe.
With their humanoid shape, chameleod will fit into a variety of armor and clothing. But their tail is often what gets in the way, and so their pants will usually accomodate for this with an appropriate hole. But this is assuming they wear more clothes, which they do not. With a skin as flashy and versatile as theirs, it seems a shame to cover it with armor and clothes. It would hamper their camouflage if anything. In their own circles, chameleods like to be naked. If pressured, they grudgingly wear clothing that is easy to jump out of, like a simple cloak.
Chameleods can live for about 70 years on average. They mature only 10 years after being hatched from their eggs.
Playing a Chameleon[edit]
Even if they can have another deity, all chameleods worship the chameleod god, the Great Invisible Observer. While the yuan-ti empire reigned, the chameleods were often persecuted for not believing in the god Sseth. The chameleods fought a lot for their own faith, and this has ingrained a strong religious identity in them. So long as a chameleod is respected about this, little else will incur their displeasure. They are largely a mellow folk who do not get all in a huff about little things. But if they are harmed or annoyed, they can be belligerent too. This makes them different from the cool-headed, taciturn lizardfolk by a mile. They have a curiosity about them for what others do, and are eager to learn new skills. But when it comes to hunting, they are vicious and pursue prey relentlessly with cunning patience.
Chameleod Characteristics: Skillful, agile, suspicious, ferocious, calm, proud, religious.

Chameleod Adventurers[edit]
Three sample Chameleon adventurers are described below.
Cut Mouth is a chameleod bard. Cut Mouth left home at a young age and set out to become a soldier in a large army however his small size and uncontrollable moods showed he was unable to be a adept warrior, however Cut Mouth had a silver tongue. Stories Cut Mouth would share with travelers somehow had an effect on them regardless of their content. Cut Mouth became a minstrel and there was power in his songs that he didn't fully understand, nor had he perfected they use. Cut Mouth no ventures far and wide honing his skills for better or for worse.
Hollow Tooth is a chameleod shaman. Hollow Tooth has some of the most beautiful skin coloration of all the Chameleods on his island. He is seated in a position of influence within the ruling family of Kamodean chieftains that also live among the Chameleods. Hollow Tooth has a strange aversion to sunlight and rarely travels in daylight without a cloak so many of his tribe are unaware of his vibrant colors. Hollow Tooth one day wants to become the chief of his tribe and supplant the Kamodean ruling class in an act of selfishness as the Chameleods seems content with the current state of affairs.
Curled Tail is a chameleod invoker. Curled Tail is considered to be the most beautiful of all Chameleod women. Her skin glistens with vibrant reds and yellows as well as whites, teals and violets. Her face is perfectly symmetrical and her tail has a delicate curl that male Chameleods cannot resist. Curled Tail seeks to leave her ancestral home to learn of religion, however her brother is involved with a group of adventurers that is less than noble. Her concerns for her brother keep her from achieving her own goals and she yearns for something more.
