Bronze Age Hoplite (5e Subclass)
Bronze Age Hoplite[edit]
Fighter Subclass
The Hoplite is a Bronze Age soldier from Greco-Roman cultures that specialized in using a breastplate and helm with a spear and shield, as well as javelins, short swords and axes, before armor such as plate mail or weapons such as rapiers existed. It is suggested that practitioners of this martial archetype take Fighting Style: Defense and the Feat: Shield Master, though they are by no means required. The Athlete background from The Mythic Odysseys of Theros is especially appropriate, as are Gladiator and Soldier.
- Dory (Long) Spear
This is a special Bronze Age appropriate spear meant to function as the historic Dory spear away and is designed for the Bronze Age Hoplite to use with its abilities. The DM may make this available as a standard weapon to any player, or keep it restricted to those trained in its use. Dory (Long) Spear - 3gp - 1d8 piercing – 6 lb. - Reach, Two Handed
- Spear Master
At 3rd Level the Hoplite may use a Dory (Long) Spear one handed, provided it is counter balanced with a shield in the second hand. The Hoplite gains advantage when throwing a spear or javelin at a target more than 10’ distant.
- Disembowel
At 7th Level the Hoplite scores a critical hit on a 19 or 20. Critical hits with a Spear, Dory (Long) Spear or Javelin do maximum damage on the doubled weapon dice (12 hp for spear/javelin; 16 hp for Dory)
- Advanced Style
At 10th Level the character may choose one of the following. 1. Skewer: When using a Spear, Dory (Long) Spear or Javelin the Hoplite may use their action to attack a number of targets within reach equal to their Dexterity modifier. 2. Phalanx: When fighting with Spear or Dory (Long) Spear with a shield the Hoplite may use their reaction to impose disadvantage on an attack against a target other than the Hoplite within reach.
- Superior Critical
At 15th Level the Hoplite scores a critical hit on an 18-20.
- Legendary Shield Master
At 18th level the Hoplite may use their reaction to cause their equipped shield to cause any attack that hit them, to miss.
