Races: Any race with even a slight bent towards evil can potentially be a Brimstone Warlock

Alignment: Any Evil

Starting Gold: As Warlock

Starting Age: "As sorcerer"

Class Features[edit]

<-fluff about class features->. All of the following are class features of the Brimstone Warlock.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Brimstone Warlocks are proficient with all simple weapons. They are proficient with light armor but not with shields. Because the somatic components required for Brimstone Warlock invocations are relatively simple, a Brimstone Warlock can use any of their invocations while wearing light armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. However, like arcane spellcasters, a Brimstone Warlock wearing medium or heavy armor or using a shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure (all invocations, including eldritch blast, have a somatic component). A multiclass Brimstone Warlock still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from levels in other classes.

Quick Note: A Brimstone Warlock gets all of their Invocations, Eldritch Essences & Eldritch Shapes from the standard Warlock list.

Invocations: A Brimstone Warlock does not prepare or cast spells as other wielders of arcane magic do. Instead, he possesses a repertoire of attacks, defenses, and abilities known as invocations that require him to focus the wild energy that suffuses his soul. A Brimstone Warlock can use any invocation he knows at will, with the following qualifications: A Brimstone Warlock’s invocations are spell-like abilities; using an invocation is therefore a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity. An invocation can be disrupted, just as a spell can be ruined during casting. A Brimstone Warlock is entitled to a Concentration check to successfully use an invocation if he is hit by an attack while invoking, just as a spellcaster would be. A Brimstone Warlock can choose to use an invocation defensively, by making a successful Concentration check, to avoid provoking attacks of opportunity. A Brimstone Warlock’s invocations are subject to spell resistance unless an invocation’s description specifically states otherwise. A Brimstone Warlock’s caster level with his invocations is equal to his Brimstone Warlock level. The save DC for an invocation (if it allows a save) is 10 + equivalent spell level + the Brimstone Warlock’s Charisma modifier. Since spell-like abilities are not actually spells, a Brimstone Warlock cannot benefit from the Spell Focus feat. He can, however, benefit from the Ability Focus feat (see page 303 of the Monster Manual), as well as from feats that emulate metamagic effects for spell-like abilities, such as Quicken Spell-Like Ability and Empower Spell-Like Ability. The four grades of invocations, in order of their relative power, are least, lesser, greater, and dark. A Brimstone Warlock begins with knowledge of one invocation, which must be of the lowest grade (least). As a Brimstone Warlock gains levels, he learns new invocations, as summarized on Table 1–1 and described below. A list of available invocations can be found following this class description, and a complete description of each invocation can be found in Chapter 4 of Complete Arcane. At any level when a Brimstone Warlock learns a new invocation, he can also replace an invocation he already knows with another invocation of the same or a lower grade. At 5th level you learn a new invocation, which could be either least or lesser. At 6th level, a Brimstone Warlock can replace a least invocation he knows with a different least invocation. At 10th level, a Brimstone Warlock can replace a least or lesser invocation he knows with another invocation of the same or a lower grade (in addition to learning a new invocation, which could be least, lesser, or greater). At 16th level, a Brimstone Warlock can replace a least, lesser, or greater invocation he knows with another invocation of the same or a lower grade (in addition to learning a new invocation, which could be least, lesser, greater, or dark). Finally, unlike other spell-like abilities, invocations are subject to arcane spell failure chance as described under Weapon and Armor Proficiency above. Brimstone Warlocks can qualify for some prestige classes usually intended for spellcasters; see Brimstone Warlocks and Prestige Classes, page 18 of the Complete Arcane, for details.

Brimstone Infusion (Sp): A Brimstone Warlock has the ability to amplify & augment their Eldritch Blasts with the infernal power of brimstone. The Brimstone Warlock may inflict upon themselves up to 1 point of ability damage per Brimstone Warlock level to increase their Eldritch Blast damage by 1d6 per point of ability damage they took, this changes the damage type to Brimstone, which is half unholy damage & half fire. All ability damage must be inflicted to the same ability score, but may change with each use. Anything that prevents/reduces this ability damage also prevents/reduces the benefits.

SPECIAL: Any effect that would change the damage type of your Eldritch Blast only changes the fire damage on a Brimstone Infusion. Half of the damage is always profane damage.

Detect Magic (Sp): A Brimstone Warlock can use detect magic as the spell at will. Their caster level equals their class level.

Depraved Soul (Ex): At level one a Brimstone Warlock must choose an evil patron. They receive Abyss-Bound Soul for pledging to a Demon Lord, Brand of the 9 Hells for pledging to a Devil Lord, or Scion of Sorrow for pledging to a Yugoloth.

Eldritch Blast (Sp): The first ability a Brimstone Warlock learns is eldritch blast. A Brimstone Warlock attacks their foes with eldritch power, using baleful magical energy to deal damage and sometimes impart other debilitating effects. An eldritch blast is a ray with a range of 60 feet. It is a ranged touch attack that affects a single target, allowing no saving throw. An eldritch blast deals 1d6 points of damage at 1st level and increases in power as the Brimstone Warlock rises in level. An eldritch blast is the equivalent of a spell whose level is equal to one-half the Brimstone Warlock’s class level (round down), with a minimum spell level of 1st and a maximum of 9th when a Brimstone Warlock reaches 18th level or higher. An eldritch blast is subject to spell resistance, although the Spell Penetration feat and other effects that improve caster level checks to overcome spell resistance also apply to eldritch blast. An eldritch blast deals half damage to objects. Metamagic feats cannot improve a Brimstone Warlock’s eldritch blast (because it is a spell-like ability, not a spell). However, the feat Ability Focus (eldritch blast) increases the DC for all saving throws (if any) associated with a Brimstone Warlock’s eldritch blast by 2. See page 303 of the Monster Manual.

Eldritch Essence: Some of a Brimstone Warlock’s invocations, such as frightful blast, modify the damage or other effects of the Brimstone Warlock’s eldritch blast. These are called eldritch essence invocations. Unless noted otherwise, eldritch blasts modifi ed by eldritch essence invocations deal damage normally in addition to imparting the effects described in the invocation description. A Brimstone Warlock can apply only one eldritch essence invocation to a single eldritch blast, choosing from any of the eldritch essence invocations that he knows. When a Brimstone Warlock applies an eldritch essence invocation to his eldritch blast, the spell level equivalent of the modifi ed blast is equal to the spelllevel of the eldritch blast or of the eldritch essence invocation, whichever is higher. If a Brimstone Warlock targets a creature with an eldritch essence blast that has immunity to the invocation’s effect, it still takes the damage from the blast normally (provided it isn’t also immune to the eldritch blast). A Brimstone Warlock can apply an eldritch essence invocation and a blast shape invocation (see below) to the same blast. When a Brimstone Warlock uses both kinds of invocations to alter an eldritch blast, the spell level equivalent is equal to the spell level of the eldritch blast, the level of the eldritch essence invocation, or the level of the blast shape invocation, whichever is higher

Eldritch Blast: Some of a Brimstone Warlock’s invocations, such as eldritch spear, modify the range, target(s), or area of a Brimstone Warlock’s eldritch blast. These are called blast shape invocations. Unless noted otherwise, eldritch blasts subject to blast shape invocations deal damage normally in addition to imparting the effects described in the invocation description. A Brimstone Warlock can apply only one blast shape at a time to an eldritch blast, and he can choose from any of the blast shape invocations that he knows. A Brimstone Warlock need not apply a blast shape invocation to his eldritch blast. When a Brimstone Warlock applies a blast shape invocation to his eldritch blast, the spell-level equivalent is equal to the spell level of the eldritch blast or of the blast shape invocation, whichever is higher. A Brimstone Warlock can apply a blast shape invocation and an eldritch essence invocation (see Eldritch Essence Invocations above) to the same blast. When a Brimstone Warlock uses an eldritch essence and a blast shape to alter an eldritch blast, the spell-level equivalent is equal to the spell level of the eldritch blast, the eldritch essence invocation, or the blast shape invocation, whichever is higher.

Damage Reduction (Ex): Fortified by the supernatural power flowing in their body, a Brimstone Warlock becomes resistant to physical attacks at 2nd level and above, gaining damage reduction 1/cold iron OR good. This increases by 1 every 3 levels thereafter. At level 10 their damage reduction changes to Cold Iron & Good.

Patron's Resistance (Ex): At 3rd level the Brimstone Warlock gains a portion of their Patron's protection. They gain energy resistance 2 to an energy form their Patron is either immune or resistant to. This increases by 2 every 3 levels thereafter, the Brimstone Warlock also gains an additional type of energy resistance every 6th level thereafter (9th, 15th, etc).

Evil's Grace (Ex): The powers of evil hold many awards for those that embrace it. Starting at 4th level the Brimstone Warlock gains an Unholy bonus to their saves equal to their Cha Mod (Minimum 0). They also gain a +1 Unholy bonus to their Natural Armor & to Use Magic Device checks, this bonus increases by 1 every 4th level.

Fiendish Resilience (Su): Starting at 5th level a Brimstone Warlock learns to use their evil connection to restore themselves. Usable a number of times per day equal to 3+ their Con mod (minimum 1), the Brimstone Warlock gains fast healing 1 for 1 round per class level. This fast healing increases by 2 every 5th level.

Evil Beckons (Ex): At level 6 & every 6th level thereafter the Brimstone Warlock gains a feat. This feat must be Devil-Touched, Evil, Vile or Tainted (as appropriate for their Patron).

Enhanced Brimstone (Su): The Brimstone Warlock increases their ability to draw upon the dark forces of their Patron. Any time they use their Brimstone Infusion to enhance their Eldritch Blast they increase the size of the damage dice. At 7th level it increases to d8s, 13th to d10s & 19th to d12s.

Apotheosis (Ex): At level 20 the Brimstone Warlock is fully inducted into their dark path, they gain the Half Fiend template. They gain the subtypes of their Patron.

Ex-Brimstone Warlocks[edit]

If a Brimstone Warlock ever has their alignment changed to good for any reason, they instantly lose all non Extraordinary class feats. In addition their Patron will place a bounty upon their head that many demons & devils will want to capitalize on, and their Evil Brand or Brand of the 9 Hells becomes a call to all evil aligned creatures on the same plane beckoning them to find & dispatch the Brimstone Warlock.
