Black Bear Tactics[edit]

Black bear will avoid combat unless PCs have disturbed its den, or unless it is protecting a food source. Once engaged, black bear will use Claw and Maul alternately. Black bears will not consciously move to flank, but will attack first available target unless marked. Black bears will move to avoid being flanked or surrounded.

Black Bear Lore[edit]

A character knows the following information with a successful Nature check.

DC 10: Black bears fiercely defend their cubs or food, but otherwise normally avoid humanoids.

DC 15: Bears use claws to attack, and frequently maul and bite their victims.

DC 20: Black bears have a keen sense of smell, they can climb trees, and will chase down any victim fleeing from them. Playing dead may cause the black bear to abandon the attack. They will not attempt to eat a humanoid they have knocked unconscious or killed.

Encounter Groups[edit]

Black bears are usually solitary unless they have cubs with them. If captured as cubs, black bears can be tamed and trained. If encountering a trained black bear, it will usually be with elves, half-elves or humans. Goblinoid creatures and kobolds prefer reptiles or vermin as pets and guard animals.
