Beavers are large rodents with stout bodies, webbed feet tipped with claws meant for digging, a wide flat tail, and long incisors meant for chewing through their primary winter food source; wood. Beavers also use their teeth to gnaw wood into dams, which restrict river flow to create lakes; lodges, which sit upon lakes to provide shelter from predators and the elements; and caches, which store food at the bottom of a lake. Without wood, beavers instead dig much more vulnerable burrows. In settings without the likes of giant rats, beavers are typically the second largest rodent, second only to capybaras.
