Azazel, the Smoldering Ember (3.5e Vestige)
From D&D Wiki
Level: 6
Binding DC: 30
Special Requirement: Yes
Legend[edit]
Azazel was once one of Lord Asmodeus' greatest lieutenants, but when the devil lord required a scapegoat to avoid persecution from his rivals, he chose Azazel. In a festival lasting months, the other devil lords slowly ripped Azazel's very essence to shreds whilst they feasted and laughed at his anguish. When they were done and he was nothing more than a festering lemure, they threw him in the pits and immediately forgot him.
Those portions of his shredded spirit lived on, however, coalescing in the deepest parts of the Nine Hells until they become strong enough to emerge as a vestige. Azazel now reaches out to would-be binders, seeking their aid in helping him regain his once great power so that he can rise up and strike down those who humiliated him so.
Manifestation[edit]
Azazel's sigil is a stylistic representation of a singular flame. When he manifests during a binding ritual, he appears as a quintessential devil, but with eyes, hair and beard made of fire, and two massive black horns protruding from his temples.
Sign[edit]
Two small, black horns spout from your forehead, and your facial features become more Mephistophelean. Your eyes momentarily flicker with hellfire whenever you use one of his granted powers, and the tips of your clothing smolders like the embers of a dying flame.
Special Requirements[edit]
Azazel demands a blood sacrifice from you before he will make any bargains. This sacrifice must deal at least 1 hit point of damage per effective binder level.
Influence[edit]
While bound to Azazel, you become as cruel as you do charming, and have the desire to corrupt as many individuals as you can, so that he can one day return to life and challenge Asmodeus and the other devil lords for their throne. You also have the nearly impossible urge to not smile wickedly every time one of your evil machinations come to fruition.
Granted Abilities[edit]
Azazel grants the following powers to you for as long as you remain bound to his vestige.
Shroud of Flames (Su): You gain fire resistance equal to your effective binder level, rounded up to the nearest multiple of 10. This resistance stacks with any you possess from other sources, and it protects you from other sources of hellfire (see below) as well. This includes but is not limited to the damage of the hellfire blast from a hellfire warlock. Once your effective binder level reaches 20, you gain total immunity to fire.
Taste of Hellfire (Su): Any fire-based attacks you make become supercharged with hellfire, allowing it to bypass all fire resistance and fire immunities. You also gain the ability to use burning hands once every 5 rounds, except that its damage is uncapped and deals 1d4 points of damage for every effective binder level you possess.
Risen from the Flames (Su): You can polymorph into a fine-sized bird the size of a sparrow, except your body is made of living flame, and the stench of brimstone hangs in the air the area you transformed. You can stay in this form for up to ten minutes per EBL, but can switch back willingly at any time. Transforming to or from requires only a swift action. Once you transform back, you cannot do so again for 5 rounds. Hide checks are impossible while in in this form.
Ear for Deception, Tongue for Deceit (Ex): You can discern lies at will, though it takes only a swift action to maintain concentration while you do so.
In addition, if you fail a Bluff or Diplomacy check, you can choose to roll a second time with a +1 bonus for every 3 EBL you possess, rounded down. However, if the second roll fails, it becomes a critical failure, and the DM is free to decide the consequences thereof. Demons/tanar'ri cannot have their attitudes risen above neutral while you are bound to Azazel, while devils/baatezu treat you with an initially friendly attitude unless you antagonize or perform some hostile act against them.
Eyes of Darkness (Su): You gain the ability to see perfectly in darkess, magical or otherwise, just as if everything within view were brightly lit even though it is not.
