Axolyte (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
Axolyte[edit]
The axolyte are strange amphibious beings born of a god of fire and lightning, strangely reduced to a creature dwelling in water.
Physical Description[edit]
Axolytes are humanoids with properties of monstrosities woven into their being. Their hairless skin is usually black and moist, a bit like a frog's porous skin. They have frills extending out from gills on the sides of their head and neck, which help them to breathe and filter air in water. Two notable things about them are a long tail like a tadpoles, and their deformed, reversed feet. Set on their round heads are two beady eyes over small nostrils and a wide mouth.
History[edit]
At a time when the world was in need of sacrifices, one god shied away from his duty to fulfill his role in the sacrifice, for he was a coward. He ran away and took the form of a dog to escape notice. Furious, the other gods punished him by robbing him of his powers, and then striking him with his own affinities. As a result, his skin became black and charred from the fire and lightning, and his ears split into pieces that hung from the sides of his head. To escape his pain, he dove into the water and to this day lives hiding away in shame beneath the surface. That was the first axolyte.
Society[edit]
Communities of axolytes are known to be found in cave systems with water, not excluding watery caves in the Underdark. Axolytes carry on the cowardly spirit of their god, and like to talk the big talk, but run usually when the going gets tough. They are organized in a simple hierarchy based on the color of blackness on their skin, with the top dog being the blackest usually. They generally do not worship any gods, instead fearing religious figures at worst, and being disgusted by them at best. Axolytes commonly like to go off on their own to seek their own desires, often boasting of their independence. But they are ultimately usually all talk.
