Atami[edit]

OOG: The Atami are an alternate version of Spirit Folk native to the Earthe' (3.5e Campaign Setting) game setting. They have a separate creation origin and there are more subtypes.

Atami Origin[edit]

OOG: The Atami do not have a creator Diety because they were created from two separate races in the Ancient Past.

Millenia ago, after the major races of Earthe' were created by the Gods, the 3e SRD:Aboleth that remained after the Time of Gods and Monsters, sought to create immortal slaves that would be forever bound to serve them.
This truth is unknown to the Atami, and they have their own creation myths.

Among the Parlanti (Elves), after The Sundering, the Aboleth captured the Quaestor Parlanti (The Seeking Elves), and The Manu who lived on the Eastern Shores of the Mackinaw Continent, known as Ashishabi. These two groups were enslaved in mind, body, and soul by the Aberrant Magics and Science of the Aboleth and interbred to create their immortal slaves named Kamun in the Aboleth Language.
Thousands of years after the Kamun were created there were the stirrings of a revolt. A few of the Kamun were able to resist their conditioning enough to think for themselves. They sought any method they could that would enable them to break the conditioning of all Kamun, but would not trade one enslavement for another, and rejected help from the Gods and Fiends. The Spirits of Nature offered the Kamun a way. In exchange for their immortality and a pledge to guard the sacred natural places in the world the Spirits would break the conditioning, which allowed the Kamun to revolt and escape their enslavement.
The Revolt lasted years, and many Kamun were killed, and not all escaped, but enough did. Those that escaped sought their own place in the world, and found three places on Earthe' that they came to call their own, and took with them the Name Atami, which means Free Soul in their language.
The Atami settled in three areas, and as time passed they became their own peoples, though all are still Atami. The Oyatenagi settled on the Mackinaw continent. The Kamui Ningen settled in Asia, and the Wauga Koori Koori settled on the Sahul Continent. (OOG, Mackinaw is North America, Asia is Asia, and Sahul is Australia).

Atami Subtypes[edit]

Their are Seven Primary Subtypes of Atami, with a few rare others. Each one preferring a specific environment, which also is the basis for each groups outlook.

  • Forest Atami Exist in great Deciduous Forests, often near Parlanti (Elven) lands.
  • Bamboo Atami Exist in hidden Bamboo Forests in Asia, and a few places in the Mezzo lands.
  • Mountain Atami Exist in Ancient Mountains, as opposed to the relatively Younger Mountains, sometimes near Dwarven Lands.
  • Plains Atami Exist in the Great Plains of the Mackinaw Continent and in some of the Steppes of Asia.
  • Desert Atami Exist in Deserts throughout the world, but are most predominant on the Sahul Continent, actively ruling the land as the Majority Race.
  • River Atami Exist near hidden or hard to reach rivers, waterfalls and secret waterways.
  • Ocean Atami Exist in the Oceans, Oceanic Islands and specific Coastlines other races avoid.

Secondary Types:

  • Stone Atami This is an Offshoot of Mountain Atami who live in areas of painted rock, sandstone valleys, and petrified forests.
  • Swamp Atami This is an Offshoot of Forest Atami who live in Deep Swamps, Bogs, Fens, and Marshes, though they often contend with the Zakala (Scaled Folk).
  • Snow Atami This is the rarest known Atami and are an Offshoot of the Desert Atami, strangely enough. They exist in the Far North, and Far South of Earthe' settling near the polar circles.

Personality[edit]

The Atami are Patient, Secretive, and generally Peaceful, unless the sacred places in Nature are in danger, then their Wrath becomes nigh uncontained.
The Atami cannot stand enslavement of any type and will do what they can directly and indirectly to end any enslavement and will seek the eradication of slavers.

Physical Description[edit]

The Atami are a bipedal race, with golden hued skin, light and fair hair, little to no body hair, slightly curved and long lobed ears, and piercing almond shaped eyes, the color of which matches their birth environment. They are the same height of most Human types, but are much lighter in weight like their ancient elven ancestors.

Relations[edit]

The Atami get along well with nature beings like Dryads, Sirens, Nereids, Treants, Galeb Duhr, etc. with great friendship to those nature beings that live in the same environment the Atami was born into.
The Atami get along with the Parlanti (Elves), Khazahd (Dwarves), Hin (Halflings), Neblin (Gnomes), and Hengeyokai (Shape Changers).
The Atami tend to stay away from Gobalins (Goblins), Yrch (Orcs), Zakala (Scaled Folk), Manu (Humans), Trölli (Trolls), Jotun (Giants), and Dragons.
The Ocean Atami get along with Tritons and Merfolk, but stay away from Scrags, Sea Hags, Sahuagin, and Kua-Toa.
The Atami do not live in the Underdark (that we know of), and thus do not interact with Underdark Peoples.
The Atami Hate Aboleth, Beholders, Illithids, and any Aberration.

Family[edit]

The Atami believe that marriage is too close to a form of enslavement and thus mostly live in Polygamous groups and extended Families. Some few exist that practice Monogamy and even fewer remain single, but they are not treated any differently for the most part.
The Females of the Atami generally have one child at any birth, but can continue to have children for hundreds of years. Twins happen rarely and are seen as special event, and there has never been a reported birth of triplets or greater.

Society[edit]

The Atami usually live in large villages or small towns found deep in the environment of their subtype. They do not have Mayors, Governors, Kings or other leader types. They exist mutually together and the eldest of the Atami usually are called for advice, judgement, or other important decisions. They are often seen as anarchial but they do have their own laws, traditions, and obligations.

The Atami of Sahul, however, do have a form of Government of sorts. They have their Clever Men or Clever Women, known as Gundir, Mulla Mulla, Ngaluunggirr, and other names depending on the region the Atami of Sahul live in. These Clever Men/Women speak with the Will of Uluru and other Spirits of the Land and guide their people in the way of life.

Atami Origin Myths[edit]

Oyatenagi Atemi[edit]

The Oyatenagi believe that they were created by the Gods to Bridge the gap between the mortal races and the spirit world. Their Spirit ancestors were given bodies made of the natural elements that they could exist in the mortal world. The first seven brothers and sisters strove to remove the corruption brought upon the world by the hateful dead. There were seven great battles, and where the seven brought low the seven great undead that place became the a sacred place of immense power.
The Oyatenagi hold the greatest spirit of their lands in the greatest honor and have shrines honoring Tse'bii Ndzis Gaii by making great stone caerns.

Wauga Koori Koori Atemi[edit]

The Wauga Koori Koori of Sahul believe that after the world was created, including the Dream Time, Bundyil the creator surveyed the world in his Wedge Tailed Eagle form and saw that the people were being plagued by Seven Evil Spirits. Bundyil commanded the other great spirits to aid the humans and granted Seven of them the powers of the first Clever Men/Women. They battled the Seven Great Evil Spirits and cleanesd the land, then they themselves faded into the Dream Time.
The Seven Evil Spirits were:

  • Djunkgao the Evil Spirit of the Ocean who hid all the fish away and sunk all the seagoing vessles.
  • Moolyewonk the Evil Spirit of the Rivers and Lakes who ate all the fish and river creatures.
  • Bunyip the Evil Spirit of the Water Holes who drowned all creatures and people who traveled near.
  • Tiddalik the Evil Frog Spirit who drank all the water on the land killing all creatures, plants and trees save the Baobob.
  • Yowie Pangkarlangu the Evil Spirit of the Forests who ripped out all the trees and ate all the animals.
  • Wambeen the Evil Spirit of Lightning that shattered the moutains and even attacked great Uluru.
  • Julana the Evil Spirit of the Plains that burned all the grasslands and homes of the people.
