Magical Explosion. When the arcanite dies, it magically teleports up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space it can see and explodes in a burst of arcane energy. Each creature within 20 feet of it must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 6 (1d12) force damage per level of the highest level spell slot the arcanite had remaining on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Spellcasting. The arcanite is a 16th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 18, +10 to hit with spell attacks). The arcanite has the following wizard spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): acid splash, chill touch, fire bolt, mage hand, ray of frost
1st level (4 slots): burning hands, magic missile, shield, sleep, thunderwave
2nd level (3 slots): flaming sphere, hold person, misty step
3rd level (3 slots): fireball, lightning bolt, slow
4th level (3 slots): confusion, ice storm, wall of fire
5th level (2 slots): telekinesis, wall of stone
6th level (1 slot): chain lightning, flesh to stone
7th level (1 slot): finger of death, forcecage
8th level (1 slot): power word stun

Surging Arcana. When the arcanite casts a spell that affects other creatures that it can see, it can choose a number of them equal to 1 + the spell's level. Each creature must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw against this magic or take 14 (4d6) acid, cold, fire, force, lightning, necrotic, poison or thunder damage (arcanite's choice). The arcanite then takes 6 (1d12) force damage per level of the spell. This damage ignores resistance and immunity.

ACTIONS

Dagger. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d4 + 3) piercing damage.

Throughout the planes, there exist countless magical secrets, enigmatic spells and forbidden lore of the most esoteric kind. Those who delve deeply into these secrets find their spellcasting abilities grow exponentially, but sooner or later, one of their discoveries is the reason why such lore was hidden in the first place. Absolute annihilation is the best these unfortunate souls can hope for, as otherwise, they may rise as undead arcanites. An arcanite's body is covered in strange scars and burns as a result of their incredibly powerful spells.
Though the arcanite's power waxes greatly, it comes at the cost of their sanity and becomes rampant if not tightly controlled. When destroyed, the arcanite's remaining magic spews forth in a brilliant burst of energy that leaves behind only a fine, translucent powder and any magic items the arcanite had at the time. The powder is highly sought after by unscrupulous arcanists, who use it as a component in rituals or partake of it directly in the belief that it will enhance their power.

Seeker of Secrets. Arcanites seek to perfect their magic, which inevitably leads them to seek out even more hidden secrets, hoping that one day they find the key that will allow them to do so. To this end, arcanites will serve masters who promise them tomes of arcane lore and magic from forgotten times. This arrangement only lasts as long as it proves beneficial to the arcanite, who will then move on, either to seek a new master or to study in seclusion. A group of arcanites may set out in search of power together, but such cabals tend to come apart quickly, as the arcanites accuse each other of lying to the others or hiding information.

Undead Nature. An arcanite doesn't require air, food, drink, or sleep.
