- Spellcasting
At level 3, you have learned to use a limited repertoire of magic.
Cantrips: You know two cantrips of your choice from the wu jen spell list. You learn additional cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Wu Jen table.
Spell Slots: The Wu Jen table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of level 1 and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
Spells Known of Level 1 and Higher: You know three level 1 spells of your choice. Two of these spells must be from the wu jen spell list, but you may choose the third from the wizard spell list instead. That spell counts as a wu jen spell for you.
The Spells Known column of the Wu Jen table shows when you learn more wu jen spells of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the table. The spells you learn at levels 8, 14, and 20 can be from the wizard spell list instead. These wizard spells count as wu jen spells for you.
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the wu jen spells you know and replace it with another spell from the wu jen spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots. If you replace one of the spells you gained at levels 8, 14, or 20, or the wizard spell you gained at 3rd level, the new spell may be from the wizard spell list. A wizard spell learned in this manner is considered a wu jen spell for you.
Spellcasting Ability: Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your wu jen spells. You use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a wu jen spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
- Ki Conversion
Starting from when you choose this Way at 3rd level, you have the ability to use your ki as a wellspring of magic within yourself. You can use your ki points to gain additional spell slots, or sacrifice your spell slots to gain additional ki points.
- Creating Spell Slots. You can transform unexpended ki points into one spell slot as a bonus action on your turn. The Creating Spell Slots table shows the cost of creating a spell slot of a given level. You can create spell slots no higher in level than 5th.
- Any spell slot you create with this feature vanishes when you finish a long rest.
Spell Slot Level | Ki Point Cost |
---|---|
1st | 2 |
2nd | 3 |
3rd | 5 |
4th | 6 |
5th | 7 |
- Converting a Spell Slot to Ki Points. As a bonus action on your turn, you can expend one spell slot and gain a number of ki points equal to the slot’s level.
- Offhand Spellcasting
Also starting from 6th level, when you use your action to cast a wu jen cantrip, you may make one unarmed strike as a bonus action.
- Arcane Resistance
Starting from 11th level, when you take damage, you can use your reaction to spend 2 ki points to grant yourself resistance to that damage type until the end of your next turn, or spend 4 ki points to grant yourself immunity to that damage type until the end of your next turn.
- Giant Growth
At 17th level, you learn the spell giant size and can cast it once between long rests using this feature without consuming a spell slot. This spell counts as a wu jen spell for you and is included in the number in the Spells Known column of the Wu Jen table.
