The Cloud of Darkness is an ancient and extremely powerful demon lord. Hailing from a layer of the Abyss known simply as the Black Void, she is driven by a single goal: to reduce all of existence to a state of absolute nothingness. Uncertain Origins. None can say when the Cloud of Darkness came into being. Some scholars suggest that it was one of the first demon lords to form at the dawn of time, or that it is one of the dreaded obyriths who are said to predate the known universe. A few cynical souls even suggest that it is some intrinsic aspect of reality itself, a balancing mechanism intended to wipe the slate clean when the cosmos hews too heavily toward good or evil, law or chaos. Whatever the case may be, the fact remains that she presents a tremendous threat to all of creation. Deceptive Appearance. When it manifests, the Cloud of Darkness takes on the form of a towering green woman whose lower body is concealed within a churning black cloud. Though it appears female and is frequently referred to as such, some demonologists believe that it has no understanding of the concept of sexes. Certainly, such a destructive being has no interest in procreation. Demonic Indifference. Those who study the denizens of the Abyss have observed that the Cloud of Darkness seldom involves itself with the power struggles of other demon lords. It will defend its native Void from invaders, but it rarely seems to mount invasions of its own. For their part, many demon lords seem content to leave the Cloud of Darkness alone: some scholars speculate that these recalcitrant fiends may even be afraid of its immense power. Only the mightiest of demon princes like Demogorgon and Orcus are powerful enough to consider her as just a potential rival. Bringer of Ruin. While it appears indifferent to demonic politics, the Cloud of Darkness has been known to take an interest in the mortal world. Legends tell of a nihilistic emperor who, fearing that his empire and accomplishments would fade away and be forgotten upon his death, forged a pact with the Cloud of Darkness to ensure that “everything and everyone” would be destroyed when he died. The Cloud of Darkness agreed, and when the emperor met his end she honoured the terms of their bargain—though perhaps not as he’d intended, as she laid his empire to waste and annihilated all but a handful of its inhabitants. |
