History
The walled town of Drayton occupies a vital position in the Cormyri Reach. The mining and trade town anchors Amacidian control of the lands between the Melidaa and Nurim's Mountains and ensures stability in that wide expanse of wilderness. Despite being well within the Westlands, the northern stretch of the Cormyri Reach is an untamed wilderness of forests and rolling grasslands. Drayton sits atop a large hill astride the Melidaan Highway, a once well-travelled border road during the Third Age. The city grew as a trade stop along the road between Taralon and Balmorra to the South and Jehanna's Rest to the north, but quickly grew wealthy off the riches of the Black Hills and eastern Nurim's Mountains. Drayton, like many Imperial internal border settlements, enjoyed long periods of plenty punctuated by feudal struggle and dynastic war. For Drayton, the hard years gave it strength. House Casserres was a product of this strength: a low trade House that took control of the budding city in the Third Age during a brief war between the Onean Houses and House Amace's Cormyri League. House Casserres used their relationships with the other local trade Houses and guilds to put up a strong front with their neighbors and cut a definite place for themselves into the eastern Imperium.
Mostly free from bullying, Drayton became a much more important part of Cormyr's eastern and northern trade. They grew in strength and remained within the Cormyri fold after the fall of the Second Imperium. Several generations later Drayton resisted the reformation of the Imperium, but favorable treaties and subsidies from House Tionne (their goal in resistance) quickly brought them back under the Imperial banner. Now that the Dragon's War is over and the Imperium has broken up Drayton is a much different place. The breakdown of unregulated Guild Trade north into Onea alongside the destruction of Jehanna's Rest means Drayton must almost exclusively trade south into Taralon and Balmorra. Additionally, since it's no longer on a bustling trade route Drayton must export instead of trading with through-traffic north and south. As part of this this sharp change in political climate, Drayton faces two large issues. First off with Jehanna's Rest in ruins Drayton becomes a city on the edge of complete wilderness north all the way to the bridge to Nurim's Reach and the old VII Legion Fortress in Onea. House Casseres and the population of Drayton have had to quickly learn how to patrol and control important regions near their city. Many of the forces they recruited and fielded for the Dragon's War still exist, long after House Casseres intended to return to normalcy, and patrol the reaches to their north. The second issue facing Drayton is the combined economic output of House Latimer in Taralon and House Reave in Reavestone Keep. Both forces are competing with Drayton's output and seek to push the city out of the market.
Despite the hardships facing the city Drayton is doing well. The city escaped the War unscathed and with all of its Guilds and businesses intact. Also the lack of through trade has forced many people in the city to expand outside its walls and seek a living in the wilds. Fur and Logging Guilds have already popped up and House has drawn charter for an official Banking Guild. Commerce and the standard of living is not what it was pre-War, but the initial shock of the lack of trade has worn off. Stone, Ore, Wood, and Furs are bought and sold in the lower city and then shipped south (or occasionally north by intrepid tradesmen).
