Familiar Switch
Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S, M
Casting time: 1 full round
Range: Touch
Target: Two animal souls switch bodies
Duration: Permanent
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

Animals touched trade bodies. Unwilling creatures (if any) are entitled to a Will save, modified by the difference in intelligence modifier or Hit Dice between the two creatures. A creature with fewer levels suffers a penalty equal to the difference. A target with more Hit Dice or intelligence modifier gains a saving throw bonus equal to the difference.

One creature is killed at the end of the spell to make this effect permanent caster's choosing. Transfering a familiar into the body of a creature more powerful than recommended, has its problems. A 6th level Sorcerer attempting to switch her familiar with a Pseudodragon, for example, may allow more than just the soul of her friend into the new host's body. Removing the hostile spirit in the familiar might require researching a new spell or performing a quest.

Using this spell bypasses the xp loss from dismissing a familiar under rules in the PHB. If the creature's type is something other than animal, its type does not change. The switched familiar does not gain the ability to speak with other creatures of their kind nor can it communicate with the former creature type.

Material Component: A drop of blood from the new creature and a clip of hair from the familiar.
