Through the swirling desert sands, you see it—an enormous Tyrant, its body covered with rocklike scales smoothed by years of wind erosion. Numerous spikes dot its hide, their tips quivering with gathered dew. Its hooked tail is grooved, much like a screw, and seems capable of tremendous feats of strength. Roaring out a challenge, the Earth Tyrant lunges towards you, its maw gaping wide.

An Earth Tyrant is an extremely ancient—and powerful—species of tyrannosaur. Although its origins have long since been lost to the ages, legend has it that the Tyrants are the spawn of a red dragon and a tyrannosaur. While certainly nowhere near as intelligent as their draconic kin, Earth Tyrants do seem to remember what could have been theirs—the power of magic, flight and wisdom—and so take their rage out on their prey.

Earth Tyrants weigh approximately 8 tons and are typically 50 feet long from snout to tail, although there have been reports of beasts reaching nearly twice that length. Its head is about 10 feet long, and its teeth measure from 5 to 9 inches in length. In spite of its weight, an Earth Tyrant is a swift runner.

Combat

An Earth Tyrant will pursue and attack whatever it considers prey, or whatever arouses its ire. Its tactics are relatively simple—charge in and bite. If attacked from behind, it will swat any annoying pests away with its tail.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, an Earth Tyrant must hit an opponent of up to one size smaller with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can try to swallow the foe the following round.

Swallow Whole (Ex): An Earth Tyrant can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of up to two sizes smaller by making a successful grapple check. The swallowed creature takes 2d8+8 points of bludgeoning damage and 8 points of acid damage per round from the Tyrant’s gizzard. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by using a light slashing or piercing weapon to deal 25 points of damage to the gizzard (AC 14). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out.

A Gargantuan Earth Tyrant’s gizzard can hold 2 Large, 4 Medium, 12 Small, 40 Tiny, or 175 Diminutive or smaller opponents.

Screwtail (Ex): Although seemingly magical in nature, this impressive attack owes its origin to the Tyrant’s evolutionary process. An Earth Tyrant can whip its tail forward at such a great speed that air becomes trapped within the grooves and, upon reaching the end of the arc, is released like a missile, dealing 3d8 points of bludgeoning damage (7d8 if you were standing right next to it) in a cone with a radius of 40ft. any living thing struck by this attack must make a Fortitude save (DC 25) to avoid being sent flying and stunned for 2d4 minutes. An Earth Tyrant can use this attack once every five turns, where it acts as a full round action.
