Way of Root and Soil

Monk Subclass

Monks of the Way of Root and Soil form a close bond with the earth and the vegetation that sprout from it. By focusing your ki on your surroundings, you can manipulate the earth and vegetation around you to empower your unarmed strikes, shape it into creatures resembling woodland beings, cast spells and make the very earth tremble at your passing. Monks of the Way of the Root and Soil see themselves as guardians of nature and might sometimes settle in one area becoming extremely territorial and hostile to anyone or anything that might threaten natures balance. Younger monks of the Way of Roots and Soil are often in search of forests or groves in need of protection and might sometimes settle in such an area after vanquishing the threat to it.

Disciple of Root and Soil

When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you learn how to focus your ki on the earth and the vegetation that sprout from it to empower your disciplines. You have to spend ki points to use these disciplines.

You know the Fury of Root and Soil and Imbue Fists disciplines and one other Root and Soil discipline of your choice, which are described in the "Root and Soil Disciplines" section below. You can learn one more discipline of your choice at 6th, 11th, and 17th level.

Whenever you learn a new discipline, you can also replace one other discipline that you already know with a new one. Once you gain access to these disciplines, you can always cast it as long as you have enough ki points.

Cast Root and Soil Spells

Some Root and Soil disciplines enable you to focus your ki on the surrounding earth and vegetation to cast spells. To cast one of these spells, you must spend the required amount of ki points. You use the spell's casting time and other rules, but you don’t need material components as you are using the environment around you to cast them.

Imbue Fists

You know how to focus your ki into your fists to imbue them with the power of the earth, turning them into rock at first and nearly indestructible metals later on as you gain levels. As a bonus action you can spend 1 ki point to imbue your fists with the power of the earth, this effect does not require you to maintain concentration on it, it lasts for 24 hours or until dismissed at will. You gain this feature at 3rd level and it improves at 6th, 11th, and 17th level.

  • At 3rd level you turn your fists into stone. You can roll a d6 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike when using your fists.
  • At 6th level you turn your fists into steel. You can roll a d8 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike when using your fists.
  • At 11th level you turn your fists into platinum. You can roll a d10 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike when using your fists.
