The gnath are a race of squat, humanoid insects that dwell in mountainous highlands. Their mound-like hive-cities sprawl across foothills and within natural caves in the mountainside. Industrious Insects. The gnath resemble humanoid beetles with two arms and two multi-jointed legs. Their faces sport a pair of compound eyes and a set of large mandibles, and their heads are crowned with a carapace resembling a wide, flat helmet or hat. They dress themselves in rags and ponchos to keep the wind at bay, but otherwise aren’t concerned with their modesty. Hive Mind. The gnath are not truly individuals. They are connected to one another by a gestalt consciousness known as the Overmind, which assigns directives and tasks to the individual bodies which make up the hive. However, it is possible for a gnath to become disconnected from the Overmind, in which case it develops a mind and personality of its own. These vath, or “nonminds”, are shunned by other gnath and driven out of the hive, where they survive by forming small communities. Ordinary gnath view vath as abominations and will hunt them down whenever they can spare the resources. Aggressive Expansionists. The gnath are driven to expand their territory, putting them at odds with other creatures in the vicinity of their hive-cities. They will often make war upon their neighbours with little to no provocation, only stopping when their numbers fall too low to maintain the offensive. When this happens the gnath will cease hostilities and perhaps even call a truce with their foes, so as to give themselves time to replenish their numbers and renew hostilities in the future. |
