Faerie Warlock (3.5e Prestige Class)

From D&D Wiki

Faerie Warlock

I didn't like those sad souls who dabble with infernal powers and demon lords. They are vulgar and boring.

My powers are far more subtle and intriguing and funny than theirs, my patron more... cordial.

—Helezana Moonlaugh, elf faerie warlock

Though not as common as infernal warlocks, many warlocks share similar mystic abilities with the fairy people. These specific invokers go beyond this similiarity with the intent to become one with fairies, studying them from afar at first then contacting them to borrow or steal their powers (sometimes the "pact" is a bit less spontaneous on the fairy's side, sometimes it's the contrary tough). They are pranksters inside, often cheerful and laughing, but sometimes they are moody and swing between extreme emotions. They like to sob as well as laugh hard.

Becoming a Faerie Warlock

The reasons warlocks take on the Faerie Covenant are the most disparate so it's not worthwhile to list them. Anyway they all need a high Charisma to make their abilities more effective. Dexterity is also important, at least to emulate the graceful fairies.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Faerie Warlock.

Weapons and Armors proficiency: A faerie warlocks gains no proficiency with weapons or armors.

Invocations: At each level, you gain new invocations and an increase in caster level as if you had also gained a level in a invoking class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained.

Fey attunement (Su): You gain a bonus on saves against illusions, sleep and enchantment spells or effects equal to half your class level (minimum 1). Your damage reduction from the warlock class or natural increases by 1 (This DR is overcome by cold iron as for warlocks).

Your connection to fey magic strenghtens, your patron gives you a bit of fey resistance.

Nymph's kiss. You gain the feat Nymph's kiss. It doesn't require you to be good, nor it counts as an exalted feat unless you are good.

Even though you may not be a good person, fairies like you and enjoy your company. It seems you have the same kind of humor.

Eldritch blast (Sp): As the class feature of the same name of the warlock. It increases by +1d6 at 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th level.

Extra invocation: You gain the feat Extra invocation. You gain another at 9th level.

Your fey friend gifts you with a new power you can choose.

New lesser invocation: Faces of the many (Sp): You gain the power to use the spell alter self as a spell-like ability. You can keep chainging your form as long as the invocation lasts. It counts as 3rd level spell.

Your skin, eyes, hair and cloths become malleable to your will. Often you must escape angry mobs and you need a quick camouflage, after having tricked them with the same ability.

Fey's grace: You add your Charisma modifier to all saves. Your damage reduction increases by 2.

If you use my variant warlock, add your Charisma modifier to your skills checks instead.

As you utilize your power your mystic bond with the fairy world becomes stronger, making you more resitant to adverse effects.

Fair eyes: You gain a +2 to your Charisma score and the CD for your illusion and enchantment invocations or spell-like abilities, as well any special invocations you gain from this class, is increased by 1.

You have a magnetic face and no one can resist looking at you. This attention helps with your ability to control others.

New lesser invocation: Dance of the moth (Sp): As the invocation fell flight but you release a pungent dust where you fly. You release this dust where you fly, and it lasts one round after you pass. As a standard action you can emit a cloud of this dust, large 10fts.x10fts. (3msx3ms), in a range of 10 feets (3 meters). Everyone caught in it, or in the trail, must make a Fortitude save or pass the turn scratching themselves or sneezing. The cloud disperses after one round. You must wait five rounds before using it again and you don't leave any trail in this time.

This fey secret opens you the path to the sky, making you able to fly with moth's wings. You cannot resist using this ability to prank others.

New lesser invocation: Arrow of the pixie (Sp): Your eldritch blast's range increase to 120 feets (36 meters). The blast doesn't damage the target but it must make a Will save to resist the sleep effect or the memory loss (chosen at the moment of the casting). The sleep effect affects a number of HD equal to double class level and works ad the spell sleep. The memory loss is only for recent memories, otherwise similar to a pixie's arrows.

Pixies are one of the commonest fey, but they are also very reclusive. Now they have open your mind to their powers granting you abilities similar to their own.

Fey aspect (Su): You gain a gaze attack, usable once per day per Charisma modifier, with a range of 30 feet (9 meter). The target must make a Fortitude save (DC=13+Charisma modifier) or become permanently blind. Those who pass the save are dazed for 1 round. Your damage reduction increases by 2.

Either due to a beauty similar to a nymph or ugliness like a night hag, your uncanny eyes can make everyone looking at you uncomfortable or worse.

Fey incarnation: You gain the fey type: your DR increases to 10/cold iron, you gain low-light vision (or its range doubles if you already have it). Your Charisma score increases again by 2. You are subject to effects and spells that affect fairies and those that affect humanoid (or your original type) as well. You gain immunity to sleep and charme effects and receive a +4 against scrying and lawful spells or effects.

Now fairies and natural spirits have accepted you as one of their own, a trickster and prankster, someone that can be serious and facetious, who loves knowledge and a good laugh.

Ex-Faerie Warlocks

Any faerie warlocks who abandons a chaotic life is left alone by their fey patrons (the same happens to warlocks who lose their fairy prisoner). They cannot advance in this class but they mantain the powers they already acquired. You can always make another pact, given you respect the prerequisites.

Campaign Information

Playing a Faerie Warlock

Combat: In combat a faerie warlock prefers to stay in the rearguard and shoot enemies from distance and use field control and mind bending powers. Usually, tough, they prefer not to resolve conflict with violence when they can, still, as fairies, they are very vindictive.

Advancement: Usually this warlocks are full warlocks as their power are enough complete and finite. They prefer feats that help ranged combat and enhance their class abilities. They are skilled and resourceful, having more invocations than normal warlocks and benefitting from a diverse and large skills pool. Fantasy is their most sharp edge.

Resources: There's no formal organization for the Faerie Covenant but they recognize each other, and are usually friendly, tough it may depends on temperament and on the relationship their patrons have.

Faerie Warlocks in the World

Greetings, my friends! The show is about to start...you have only to roll initiative...
—Julianor Patresk, half-elf faerie warlock

Faerie warlocks are wild souls, always searching for something new, be it a piece of information, an adventure or a victim to their jokes. They are erratic appearing one da to stay a long time, then go away in the night without preparation. They can be seen as harmless tricksters or malicious and dangerous and they are probably both. They have enemies and friends everywhere, so they have always somewhere to go and somewhere not to go.

NPC Reactions: Before meeting them, people can be friendly or neutral, but their memory of the warlock is bound to the craziest thing it does in their presence, usually not something they take with the same spirit of the warlock.

Faerie Warlock Lore

Characters with ranks in Knowledge(arcana) and Knowledge(nature) can research faerie warlocks to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge(arcana), Knowledge(nature)
DC Result
11 Some warlocks use powers that differ from other warlocks' abilities

They are strange, they seem to care more about enjoying themselves rather than gaining power.

16 This warlocks are called fairy whisperers as they are often seen laughing and talking loudly in forests and groves.
21 They make pacts, called faerie covenants, with fey and similar forces of nature to emulate them.

They seem to be obsessed by wild magic and jokes.

26 A few records from ex-faerie warlocks of old age hint that this "covenant" thing is an elaborated prank made up by fairies at the expense of these obsessed people.
