Ambusher. In the first round of combat, the crocotta has advantage on attack rolls against any creature it surprised.

Mimic. The crocotta can mimic any sounds it has heard, including voices. A creature that hears the sounds can tell they are imitations with a successful DC 19 Wisdom (Insight) check. If the crocotta has read the creature's thoughts, the creature has disadvantage on the check.

Nimble Escape. The crocotta can take the Disengage or Hide action as a bonus action on each of its turns.

Surprise Attack. If the crocotta surprises a creature and hits it with an attack during the first round of combat, the target takes an extra 10 (3d6) damage from the attack.

Sure-Footed. The crocotta has advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws made against effects that would knock it prone.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The crocotta makes three bite attacks.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage.

Read Thoughts. The crocotta magically reads the surface thoughts of one creature within 60 feet of it. The effect can penetrate barriers, but 3 feet of wood or dirt, 2 feet of stone, 2 inches of metal, or a thin sheet of lead blocks it. While the target is in range, the crocotta can continue reading its thoughts, as long as the crocotta's concentration isn't broken (as if concentrating on a spell). While reading the target's mind, the crocotta has advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Charisma (Deception, Intimidation, and Persuasion) checks against the target.

The dark has always terrified people; throughout every culture, there are stories of monsters that hide in the woodlands or deep within the night. While these stories are mostly to scare children, there is some truth to every story. For example, while some may be exaggerated, many are right to shutter when they hear tales of the crocotta.

Deep in the Forest. The crocotta is a cunning and deceitful predator, that embodies the idea of brain over brawn. The mule-sized creature has the head and body of a hyena, the mane of a horse, a yellow-orange, spotted coat of fur and stands on cloven hooves. As combat is not its strong suit, a crocotta uses deception to lure in its prey.
To learn all there is to know about its chosen prey, the crocotta will use its powers of the mind to read the victim's surface thoughts and memories. This lets it know all there is to know about the prey and the crocotta will devise the best strategy within its abilities around this profile. While a noble may fall victim to a crocotta once in a while, the usual victims of crocotta are the peasantry and tribal folk who live close to the wilderness.

Master of Deceit. While the power to read thoughts is frightful, the aspect of the crocotta that is the most terrifying is its ability to perfectly mimic the voice. A crocotta's favorite tactic is to mimic the voice of those closest to the prey, to drive them into the woods. When their prey is far from the community and all alone, the crocotta will strike in a quick and deadly blow.
An easy target that put up no fight, a favorite prey of crocotta is children due to their trusting and curious nature. To lure a child into the woods will call to them in the voice a friend, trusted adult, or, most often, a loved one such as a parent. For what child would ever suspect their own parent to be a deadly creature of the night.
