Ironshell beetles were once vermin that were selected by powerful wizards to serve as deterrents and guards to their towers and holds. The prime base creature for this is the giant stag beetle, prized for its great resilience and powerful bite attack. In an excruciatingly painful procedure, the outer layer of the creature's chitinous exoskeleton is polymorphed, laced and subsequently studded with form-fitting metal armoring, giving it a massive boost in power and defensive capability. Although no less mindless, the newly created ironshell beetle may be commanded with an amulet created during the same procedure, much like an ordinary golem. Although they are treated as and colloquially referred to as constructs, underneath their layer of cruelly affixed metallic armor they still maintain a crackle of life. As a result, although possessing the traits of normal constructs, they still require food and air.
