Chesnaught
Physical Description
A Chesnaught attempting to intimidate an unseen foe. Source |
Chesnaughts are bipedal, mammalian pokemon that possess a large, domed, spiked shell on their back that acts as armor. The armor, beige in color like most of its body, is trimmed with red and green bands and has 4 large spikes jutting from the back with two smaller spikes on the shoulders. The armor connects in the front by a green band not unlike a chest-plate. Its beige colored body, limbs and tail seem to have plating banded onto them, and it's thick arms have green plating with two spikes on one side of each arm. On its hands and feet are three brown digits. Lastly, it has a small, pink nose and a beard, with a white fur on its chest that looks like an extension of its beard.
Some chesnaughts are said to have dark green bodies and armor with dark brown and orange trimming, and it's white chest fur and beard looking a dark beige color.
History
Chesnaughts, and their chespin and cuilladin young, were first discovered in the forests of Kalos.
These bulky, spiky armored pokemon starts off as the small, buck-toothed and hedgehog-like chespin. On these creatures are soft spines it can flex in such a way that they can pierce stone. chespin are quite the curious creature, so much so that it often finds itself getting into trouble often, but still seems to keep an optimistic attitude. As it grows, so too does its armor, and it grows to such a degree that it makes the chespin look more rotund than normal. It is at this point that the chespin has grown into a quilladin.
The former chespin's previously soft spines have now grown into sharp, pointed spikes, and their stumpy legs look almost as if it should be impossible for them to support their heavy frame. Its armor is now so durable that some of the most hard-hitting attacks won't phase it. To strengthen themselves, especially their lower bodies, they will ram into each other. However, they are very kind creatures and will not pick fights with anyone, but will defend themselves if necessary and usually by waiting for the enemy to strike first and then counterattacking with its spikes.
As the Quilladin exercises it's lower body, it grows taller and it's armor splits open, ultimately becoming a chesnaught, who will remain in the forest they grew up in and protect it. Sometimes a chesnaught chooses to go out of the forest and explore the world. Leaving the forest is by no means taboo to the chesnaught and a returning chesnaught will always be welcomed back into it's home. Although they are not usually found outside of Kalos's forests, one was supposedly seen in Alola on Exeggutor Island. Since chesnaughts tend to live in forests for the purpose of protecting them, it is thought this chesnaught went to Exeggutor Island to act as a guardian for the long-necked palm tree pokemon. It is unknown if this chestnaught is connected to the serperior that has also been seen on the same island.
Society
Chesnaughts are very kind and friendly towards any and all races. Unless someone harms their forest or their friends and loved ones, one will almost never see them angry. Some will go and live in human society, offering their services as town guards or, if they want to explore the world, to adventuring parties.
Interestingly, and amusingly, chesnaughts supposedly were not always called by that name. When they started living in human society, they were sometimes called "Chestnut Knights" because of their coloration and natural knightly appearance. According to rumor, even the chesnaughts liked the name, shortened it to "chesnaught" and the rest is history. However, given how there is no record of the chesnaughts going by any other name, the story is considered a myth.
Chesnaught Names
Chesnaughts have a unique naming scheme. A chestnaught that is adept at martial combat will usually take an Elven name, whereas one with more magical prowess commonly take a Sylvan name. It is believed by some that no female chesnaughts exist due to how all of them have a beard, but, while a majority of their race consists of males, female chesnaughts do exist.
