5e SRD talk:Intelligence
From D&D Wiki
What is minimal level of Intelligence, at which creature is considered "Sentient" and "Sapient"? Is it like that: Int0=Mindless, Int1=Instinctive, Int2=Animal, Int3=Dumb but sapient? --95.167.183.235 03:10, 30 October 2024 (MDT)
- Yes, the description you just listed is entirely correct. 3 is the lowest intelligence a creature can have while still being considered sapient. Below that threshold, a creature is mentally incapable of demonstrating the higher order reasoning and problem solving abilities that separate humans from other animals. 2601:285:4100:14B0:1E8E:3406:9E22:6F35 03:41, 30 October 2024 (MDT)
- What is difference between Int-, Int0, Int1 and Int2? --95.167.183.235 04:44, 30 October 2024 (MDT)
- Okay, I looked at some documents and it turns out we were both wrong. Here are my findings.
- Unlike 3e, 5e does not use Intelligence scores of - or 0. At all. Even creatures which are totally mindless and can take no actions other than what's dictated by their programming have Intelligence scores of 1. See 5e SRD:Animated Armor for an illustration.
- Int 1 can mean any number of things. But for the most part, the average animal has an Int of 1. frogs as amphibians IRL have much more complex brains than vermin such as scorpions, but 5e gives them the same intelligence score.
- On the other hand, most mammals such as bears pretty consistently have an Int of 2.
- The smartest animals, the sort that can be highly trained or domesticated, actually have an Int of 3! See 5e SRD:Cat and 5e SRD:Mastiff for two different proofs of this.
- Honestly, I'm not sure what to do with this information, it means I have to totally re-evaluate my definition of sapient. 2601:285:4100:14B0:1E8E:3406:9E22:6F35 05:08, 30 October 2024 (MDT)
- So, you want to say, what Int4 is minimum sapient? And how Int3 with actual hands would act - is that enough to use tools, weapons and armor? --95.167.183.235 05:36, 30 October 2024 (MDT)
