In Infamous 1e, all Fighter classes are allowed the use of weapon specialization similar to the functionality given by the AD&D Unearthed Arcana. Any class listed as a "Fighter-Type" such as Rangers and Paladins are also allowed the use of weapon specialization. Specialization refers to multiple proficiencies being taken in a single weapon, meaning a Fighter can begin the game with all 4 of his weapon proficiencies in but one weapon, such as his longsword. If 3 or more proficiencies are taken in a weapon, "Fast Draw" is gained. This ability allows for freely drawing the specific weapon in the shortest amount of time, taking less than a single segment to fully draw a weapon. It is advised that Fighters take advantage of this to the fullest, as this can allow the character to start combat unexpectedly. Consider the following situation: The party arrives at a military checkpoint with armed guards, who ask the party to present travel papers. The Magic-User pretends to reach for his travel papers, taking the guard's eyes off of you. You swing into action, drawing your two-handed sword instantly, killing a guard on the spot. Combat ensues after the rest of your party benefits from a surprise round, and the battle is easily won.

The following table will detail the benefits gained from each tier of weapon specialization.

  • 2 Proficiencies in a weapon: +1 to hit, +1 to damage.
  • 3 Proficiencies in a weapon: +1 to hit, +1 to damage, + Fast Draw.
  • 4 Proficiencies in a weapon: +2 to hit, +3 to damage, + Fast Draw.
  • 6 Proficiencies in a weapon: +3 to hit, +5 to damage, + Fast Draw.
  • 8 Proficiencies in a weapon: +4 to hit, +7 to damage, + Fast Draw.

More than 8 proficiencies in any given weapon is technically allowed, but yields no benefits. There are some stipulations involving this ability with regard to what your DM might allow. In some games, it has been ruled that the damage bonus does not apply to ranged attacks. In others, Fighters are not permitted more than 1 additional proficiency in weapon specialization at the start of the game, with additional proficiencies being available as you increase in level.
