Way of the Spear Master (5e Subclass)
From D&D Wiki
The Way of the Spear Master[edit]
The way of the spear master is a tradition that focuses on mastering the simplest and yet more versatile of weapons: the spear. This weapon dominates the battlefield for ages due to being effective and easy to learn how to teach to an untrained individual. However, in the hands of the spear master, the spear transcends its status. Due to being simple to learn how to use, is the perfect weapon to master, since it leaves more time in the hands of the monk to train and perfect its technique and learn its secrets.
- Wooden Limb
Starting when you choose this monastic tradition at 3rd level, the spear becomes a extension of your body. Whenever you can replace any unarmed strikes you are able to make on your turn with attacks using a spear.
In addition, whenever you hold your spear in two hands, it gains the reach property.
- Spear Versatility
Also at 3rd level, you can use all parts of the spear as a weapon, hitting with the handle, slashing with the blade and piercing with the tip. You can choose to deal slashing, piercing or bludgeoning damage when attacking with a spear.
- Spear Stances
At 3rd level, you can hold your spear in different ways, assuming different postures. Assuming a stance requires a bonus action.
- Aggressive Stance. You add your martial arts die to the first damage roll with your spear until the end start of your next turn. You can take this stance as part of the same bonus action used to take the Flurry of Blows.
- Defensive Stance. You forgo one of your attacks with the spear on this turn to add a bonus of +2 to your AC until the start of your next turn. You can take this stance as part of the same bonus action used to take the Patient Defense.
- Sentinel Stance. When a creature moves within reach while you are in this stance, you can make an attack with a spear against it, as a reaction. On a hit, its movement speed is reduced to 0. You can take this stance as part of the same bonus action used to take the Step of the Wind.
- Flowing Spear
At 6th level, your attacks with a spear ignore resistances and immunities to nonmagical damage.
In addition, whenever you hit a creature with an attack, you can replace one of your current stance by another, without using an action.
- Stance Master
Starting at 11th level, each of your stances improves, gaining one additional benefit below:
- Aggressive Stance. You can forgo one of your attacks to spin the spear, making one attack against each creature within reach.
- Defensive Stance. You can use your reaction to reduce the damage of a melee attack to half.
- Sentinel Stance. You gain one additional reaction in each turn, except your own.
- Spear Master
When you reach the 17th level, you finally achieve the full control over your spear. You can spend 6 ki points as a bonus action to gain the benefit of the three stances at once, lasting for 1 minute.
