Half Oni

Physical Description

Artist: Sparda

The half-oni is born from a humanoid and oni that fall in love or when particular wizards experiment with breeding an oni. These half breeds retain the appearance of both their humanoid and oni parent, with many having horns, fang-like tusks, sharp teeth, and/or extremely wild hair. Half-oni's height varies considerably, as some half-oni are tall and thin, while others can be extremely large and bulky. Regardless of a half-oni's appearance, their mixed heritage makes it so they never truly look like a member of their non-oni's parent's race, but they are never as horrifying as their full-blooded oni brethren.

The First Halfbreed

The half-oni, also known as hanyo (meaning "half-demon"), is a mixture of a human and the oni yōkai either by birth or by unnatural means. The first recordings of an oni hanyo was named Kidōmaru, the son of Shuten Dōji and a human woman. Although part human, Kidōmaru was treated poorly by humans from his village for carrying the blood of a yōkai. When his mother passed away, he went to live with his father, king of the oni up in the mountains. When Kidōmaru’s father was slain by a knight, he tried to avenge his father’s death by killing that man. He concealed himself inside of a cow's corpse, planning to ambush his father’s killer but was outwitted and ultimately defeated.

After this, it was many years until reports of oni-like creatures began being sighted amongst the horrible demon-giants. Many assumed they were simply younger oni, being taught by their parents until rumors spread of people being kidnapped and the smaller oni's actually being full-grown half-onis. Since then, groups of half-oni and oni have been the scourge of civilization. After the humiliation Kidōmaru caused the oni, when a half-oni is born, the oni parent typically tries to take the child away and indoctrinate them into their ways.

Acceptance

Most half-oni will choose to live with their oni brethren, as other humanoid settlements fear the oni as well as anything that comes from it. These locations may be remote mountains, caves, forgotten islands, or abandoned fortresses. But there are also some who will choose to try to live in human societies and show that they are no harm. Depending on the village some of these half-oni are accepted and treated kindly living in peace with other humans, while some other villages may treat them like abominations and may even try to kill the half-oni in its sleep, as they fear it shall do the same.

Half-Oni Traits

Half-oni tend to either be troubled or calm and collected souls. The ones that are in between usually don't last long.
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength or Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.
Age. Half-oni mature at the same rate as humans, but can live for much longer, often reaching 280 years of age.
Alignment. Due to their giant origins, many half-oni tend towards evil.
Size. Half-oni are built like humans but are much more bulky, tall and weigh excessively more anywhere between 200-400 pounds. Your height ranges from 6 to well over 7 feet in height; your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Menacing. People tend to get nervous around you. You gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill.
Oni-ni-Kanabo. Half-oni carry the sense of “strong beyond strong,” and dislike defeat. When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
Supernatural Strength. Half-oni have been known to be able to tear even the strongest of Yōkai apart with their raw strength, and are reputed to launch boulders at their opponents without a struggle. When wielding a melee weapon without the heavy or two-handed properties, you can use either your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage roll of the attack.
Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining the weight you can push, drag, or lift. This doesn't affect your carrying capacity.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and your choice of either Giant or Infernal.
