False Appearance. While the devilroot remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary plant.

Speak With Plants. The devilroot can communicate with plants and plant creatures as if they shared a language.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The devilroot makes two melee attacks.

Vine. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must then succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or become infected with a disease. Creatures immune to the poisoned condition are immune to this disease.
Pollen invades an infected creature's system, killing the creature in a number of hours equal to 3d8 + the creature's Constitution score, unless the disease is removed. In half that time, the creature becomes poisoned for the rest of the duration. After the creature dies, it sprouts 1d6 rooter motes that grow to full size in 7 days.

Fiendish Pollen (Recharge 5-6). The devilroot releases toxic pollen in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 27 (5d10) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
A creature slain by this attack sprouts 1d6 rooter motes that grow to full size in 7 days.


Sometimes, when a rooter spends enough time in or around the Lower Planes or a portal that leads there, it is changed by the vileness of those planes. Slowly, it grows larger than most other rooters, and its vines look black, as though withered, though in truth the devilroot is very much alive, and it constantly hungers for humanoid flesh. With a sly and subversive nature, devilroots are very abnormal, with an intellect unmatched by their inferiors, who follow their orders unerringly, as though they were forced. Some rooter swarms led by devilroots fight alongside demon hordes or devil legions, as the pragmatic devilroot is ever willing to sacrifice groups of lesser rooters for the survival of even the weakest of fiends. In exchange for their servitude, the rooter swarm grows massive, given free reign to spread their pollens and swell to incredible sizes under the leadership of a twisted and wicked devilroot. The surest way to disperse such a swarm is to slay the devilroot, though they are incredibly powerful, being stronger, faster, and far more intellectual than the comparatively larger amalgamations. They have no fear of flame, as the fiendish power within them protects them from it, and they can expel vicious pollen that carries the accursed spores that grow into new rooters.
