Talk:Arcane Weapon Master (5e Subclass)
From D&D Wiki
Balance
I am a little bit concerned that this guy is too powerful. I'm afraid that some of the changes I've made to standard abilities such as spellcasting to try to tone him down are a little bit wacky. I'm considering giving him a d8 hit die. Additionally, I'm also concerned that sorcerers and other spontaneous arcane casters might benefit entirely too much from taking just a single level in this class...I don't want to remove the spell overlap unless I have to, so I'm considering either granting weapon and armor proficiencies slowly as one gains Arcane Weapon Master levels (i.e. at level 1, Simple weapons, weak polearms, and light armor; at level 3, light shields, shortbows, and small bladed weapons, et cetera, until granting all martial weapons, armor, and non-tower shields at level 10). I guess I could also allow spell overlap only up to the highest Arcane Weapon Master spell level. Additionally, I'm a little concerned about how general the ability to buff users of items is. I might restrict that to only granting effects to *wielders or holders* of the items.
I'm also considering adding some or all of the following spells to the spell list:
0— Resistance***.
1st— Shield***, Mage Armor***, Enlarge Person***, Expeditious Retreat***, Reduce Person***
2nd— Protection from Arrows***, Resist Energy***, Blur***, Invisibility***, Mirror Image***, False Life***, Alter Self***, Bear's Endurance***, Bull's Strength***, Cat's Grace***, Eagle's Splendor***, Fox's Cunning***, Owl's Wisdom***
3rd— Sepia Snake Sigil, Explosive Runes***, Heroism***, Rage***, Illusory Script, Haste***, Secret Page
4th— Fire Trap, Otiluke's Resilient Sphere
5th— -
6th— Greater Heroism***, Tenser's Transformation***, Stone to Flesh**, Flesh to Stone**, Repulsion***, Contingency***
7th— Statue***
8th— Iron Body***, Clone*
9th— Shapechange***
Thanks for your help with and examination of my class, anyone who's read this far! And please be nice, I'm new here! --Celin 01:37, 10 February 2009 (MST)
- I don't think he's too powerful. His spell list sucks too much for that to be true. Surgo 07:58, 10 February 2009 (MST)
- Awesome, that's what I was going for! :-D Thanks! --Celin 10:29, 10 February 2009 (MST)
- He needs Polymorph and Polymorph Any Object as he's got Alter Self and Shapechange, may as well finish the chain. --TK-Squared 10:57, 10 February 2009 (MST)
- How about Antimagic Field? It would make him extremely powerful but would go along with the idea of him being a primary fighter.
20 Levels?
Why is this 20 levels long? Why not just make it 10 levels long and then add an epic progression, or make it a base class? --Green Dragon 09:58, 9 March 2009 (MDT)
To tell you the truth I'm a little bit fuzzy on how epic prestige levels work. I'm looking at Epic Level Basics but some of the language would imply that some aspects apply only to epic base classes. Specifically, "spells per day don't increase after 20th level" and the bit about gaining new class features. Is there a more specific reference that I'm missing somewhere? Thanks for your help! --Celin 17:02, 9 March 2009 (MDT)
This is slightly later than everyone else, but I agree with Green Dragon, I think this would work much better as a base class, mainly because you're hitting, at the earliest, 20th level by the time you've only gotten 15 levels of the class. --Eavath 08:02, 27 October 2011 (MDT)
