Jikiniki are just burrowing ghouls who have no eyes and detect the world through vibrations in the soil since they perpetually dig their way through soft soil like sand, clay, or topsoil they actually can detect enemies easier when under the ground then when above the ground. Strangely enough in pure darkness, they can easily find someone because of those fine senses and the smell of their breath. Jikiniki are known for ambushing travelers at nights or sneaking into funeral processions and waiting till they are over so they can dig up the corpse and devour it. If a shrine or pagoda is not properly warded the jikiniki will sneak in during the night to steal food that was offered. These loathsome creatures are generally scavengers who feed on carcasses across the lonely roads of the world. The singing of monks and ringing of bells seem to disturb them greatly, as they weep blood uncontrollably and flee from the music either deep underground or far away from temples. If a temple as been abandoned they will come back to defile it. |
