Brittle stars are close relatives of starfish, with long, whip-like arms they use to crawl along and swim, if awkwardly. While they lack their starfishes long lives, brittle stars do occasionally grow to giant sizes. However, rather than engulfing things much larger than their mouths, brittle stars are generally scavengers or detritivores, with those that do hunt organisms preferring prey smaller than themselves. In spite of this, their mouths are still capable of biting. |
