Pactblade (5e Subclass)
From D&D Wiki
Pactblade
Roguish Archetype: Some rogues specialize in assassination and some in espionage, you on the other hand devoted your life to understanding eldritch magic. Your devotion sparked an interest in an otherworldly patron with whom you forged a pact.
- Pact Magic
By the time you choose this roguish archetype at 3rd level, your eldritch research and the magic bestowed on you by your patron have given you ability to cast spells.
- Cantrips
- You know two cantrips of your choice from the warlock spell list. You learn additional a third cantrip of your choice at beginning at 10th level.
- Spell Slots
- The Pactblade Spellcasting Table (see Arcane Trickster Spellcasting table) shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a short or long rest.
- For example, if you know the 1st-level spell thunderwave, and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast thunderwave using either slot.
- Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher
- At 1st level, you know two 1st-level spells from the warlock spell list. One of them is Hex and the other is of your choice
- The Spells Known column of the Pactblade table shows when you learn more warlock spells of your choice of 1st level and higher. A spell you choose must be of a level no higher than what's shown in the table's Slot Level column for your level. When you reach 7th level, for example, you learn a new warlock spell, which can be 1st or 2nd level.
- Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the warlock spells you know and replace it with another spell from the warlock spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots and you cannot replace your hex spell.
- Spellcasting Ability
- Choose Intelligence or Wisdom as your spellcasting ability for your pactblade spells (dependent on your connection to your patron e.g. magic gained from study is intelligence and magic gained from understanding is wisdom). From now on the ability you chose is your spellcasting ability for the purpose of casting of spells. In addition, you use the same ability modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a pactblade spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence or Wisdom modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence or Wisdom modifier
- Spellcasting Focus
- You can use an arcane focus as a spellcasting focus for your pactblade spells.
- Pact of the Blade
When you choose this roguish archetype at 3rd level, you gain the ability to create a pact weapon in your empty hand as an action. You can choose the form that this melee weapon takes each time you create it and you are proficient with it while you wield it. This weapon counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
Your pact weapon disappears if it is more than 5 feet away from you for 1 minute or more. It also disappears if you use this feature again, if you dismiss the weapon (no action required), or if you die.
You can transform one magic weapon into your pact weapon by performing a special ritual while you hold the weapon. You perform the ritual over the course of 1 hour, which can be done during a short rest. You can then dismiss the weapon, shunting it into an extradimensional space, and it appears whenever you create your pact weapon thereafter. You can't affect an artifact or a sentient weapon in this way. The weapon ceases being your pact weapon if you die, if you perform the 1-hour ritual on a different weapon, or if you use a 1-hour ritual to break your bond to it. The weapon appears at your feet if it is in the extradimensional space when the bond breaks.:
- Eldritch Invocation
When you choose this roguish archetype at 3rd level, you gain one eldritch invocation from the list available to the warlock. For invocations that have a certain warlock level as a prerequisite, you can use one-third your rogue level rounded up plus your warlock level (if any) for the purposes of meeting the invocation's prerequisite. You also meet pact of the blade prerequisite.
You gain an additional invocation when you reach 9th level, and again at 17th level. Additionally, when you gain a level in the rogue class, you can choose one of the invocations you know and replace it with another invocation you could learn at that level.
- Superior Hex
Starting from 9th level you have advantage on your concentration checks to maintain your Hex spell. Also you don't need advantage on the attack roll to apply your sneak attack if the creature is under your Hex spell and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll.
- Improved Pact
Starting from 13th level, your connection with your patron grows stronger. From now on you can use your bonus action to summon your pact weapon to your hand and any attack roll you make using your pact weapon is a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 on the d20.
- Lifedrinker
Starting from 17th level, when you hit a creature with a sneak attack, you can deal necrotic damage instead of your normal weapon damage. You then gain hit points equal to half the damage dealt (rounded down). You can use this feature number of times equal to your chosen spellcasting ability modifier (Intelligence or Wisdom).
