Kaltamorn Regional Geography (Teon Supplement)

Kaltamorn Regional Geography
The surface of the Kaltamorn region is curved like that of a normal terrestrial planet. It hosts two major continents: Morea (the western) and Alero (the eastern). The Morea continent, the western and larger of the two, is older by at least 25,000,000 years. Whereas the Alero, the younger and eastern one, is known to be host to more seismic and volcanic activity. Because Morea has a larger polar region, and because Alero has a reputation for volcanoes, the western continent has been associated with ice and the eastern one with fire (even though both continents have polar regions). Hence the continents get their nicknames: "Morea of Ice" and "Alero of Fire".
Despite the fact that there only seems to be two major continents in the whole region of Teon tectonic activity still exists between them. This activity is seldom significant by realistic standards but because it happens so infrequently in Kaltamorn, the inhabitants think it to be far more significant given how rare it is. The region's one volcano, Mt. Firepeak (a composite volcano), erupts regularly every 4,821 years. That said, deep-sea races have reported strong volcanic activity deep within St. Flowermore's Trench.
Since the Kaltamorn region is part of Teon, it does not curve back on itself to form a complete sphere. If one were to take a ship from a port city and sail directly away from land, they would not circle around and appear on the other side of the map. This is because Kaltamorn is within Teon where an infinite number of regions are magically strung together like pocket dimensions. Each region generally has its own curvature, constellations, weather, etc. And Kaltamorn is no exception.
World Map
Area
- Total: ~27,546,000 square miles.
- Land: ~9,104,248 square miles.
- Water: ~18,441,752 square miles.
Climate
Mostly temperate, but arctic in Istlevan, Tenverok, and Powderlight, arid in T'lun and Alaro (both rocky deserts) with a sandy desert in south-east Shonla; lower arctic regions face warm summers and very cold winters due to an uncanny conflict of wind patterns between the middle and northern regions of Kaltamorn; T'lun and Alaro remain warm and arid despite their proximity to the arctic regions due to this strange wind phenomenon. Scholars are convinced that the cause is magical in some way, shape, or form. But this has yet to be definitively proven.
Terrain
Large mountain ranges in the middles of landmasses with lush forests generally growing on their west sides. Deserts and rugged terrain tend to be found on the eastern sides of the mountain ranges due to the rain shadow effect. Wetlands dominate most delta regions of various types while moors tend to lie near the coastlines. Grasslands and plains fill in the areas in between mountains, forests, and swamps with the occasional swath of badlands cutting them off from each other. Northern tundras are interrupted with occasional winter forests, ones that have not been charted due to the inhospitable climate and weather.
Elevation
Mean Elevation: 2,617.32 ft.
Elevation Extremes:
- Highest point (land): Mt. Firepeak (31,749.47 ft.)
- Lowest point (land): Dustwater gorge (-379.35 ft.)
- Lowest point (sea): Sir. Flowermore's Trench (-48,254.617 ft.)
Natural Resources
The following are notable resources that may be found in the Kaltamorn region. It is not an exclusive list, it merely points out some of the more notable ones. This list does not account for availability, discovery, or utilization of any the following items:

Natural Hazards
Tsunamis on the eastern coast of Tenverok, Dodervan, Shonla, and Undlegurnd; earthquakes in Gorne; hurricanes in east Verdano, Alaro, and Shunkor; volcanism in east Gorné, west Shunkor, and south Powderlight; tornadoes south of Crescent mountains and north of Serlin Forest, between the Serlin Moors all the way to the east coast of Shonla; mud / Rock slides on Cragpeak, Mt. Shade, and parts of the Crescent mountains; forest fires rarely appear in Cinderbark forest; flooding in most major wetlands.
Squall Gates
At the edges of the Kaltamorn region lie tremendous, everlasting storms that are so strong, so fast, so powerful, and so hard to sail through that most people avoid them altogether. Not only that but the location of these storms shifts and varies irregularly, generally staying about 1000 or more miles away from land. When sailing farther and farther away from the Morea and Alero continents it is usually only a matter of time before encountering one of these massive storms. These massive storms at the fringes of the Kaltamorn region have the tendency to magically transport people and objects to different regions. This has earned them the nickname: "Squall Gates".
Squall Gates are known to host waves bigger than 40 feet and gusts of wind faster than 200 mph. Every single known record detailing them has stated that they occurred at night and those mostly come from survivors lucky enough to have make it back to shore. Of the hundreds of explorers who went missing or were presumed dead during an encounter with a Squall Gate, only five expeditions have successfully left Kaltamorn and then successfully returned.

Unfortunately, explorers who have attempted to avoid the harsh conditions of the squall gates discovered two things. One was that attempting to fly over the storm was a very ill-advised idea, seeing that there doesn't seem to be an upward limit of how tall the storm clouds are. And the second were violent currents that swept up and nearly killed the underwater expeditions when they tried to sail beneath the storms. To date only three attempts at each method to avoid the squall gate have been made, all of them were failures.
