Thought Mage, Variant (5e Subclass)
Thought Mages can reach out to the Weave by sheer thinking, and have a special, intimate and intuitive connection with the arcane, which they develop through meditation and practice. Access to the strands of magic and release of arcane power is for a Thought Mage like an act of imagination: mostly silent and immediate. As Thought Mages become more powerful, the boundaries of their mental spellcasting expand.
Often, verbal components of spells for a Thought mage are reversed, or expressed in unconventional ways. Usually, the need for somatic components is seen an unpractical annoyance that the Thought Mage will strive to overcome through practice.
Thought Mage Verbal Component Quirks:
1 - During casting, all sounds are muffled in a 30ft sphere around you.
2 - During casting, creatures in a 30ft sphere can hear a buzzing or a hum in their head.
3 - During casting, everyone in a 30 ft sphere can hear your voice explain what you would like the spell to do.
4 - To focus on your spell you need to hum a melody or sing.
5 - To focus on your spell you make clicking sounds with your tongue.
6 - You express normal verbal components, but you do not move your lips while casting.
Basic Mental Spellcasting
At level 1 you choose one of your cantrips, the casting of which is done as if under the Subtle Metamagic effect.
Metamagic focus
At level 3, you cannot pick Metamagic options as you are automatically equipped with an innate version of the Subtle Spell and Quickened Spell Metamagic effects. You can cast any of your cantrips with the Subtle Spell Metamagic effect for free or with the Quickened Spell metamagic effect for 1 Sorcery Point. Standard rules apply to all other spell levels. Your Subtle and Quickened modifiers can be stacked at the price of 2 extra sorcery points (for example a subtle and quickened cantrip will cost 3 sorcery points).
Improved Mental Spellcasting
At level 6 any spell cast at a level up to one third of your sorcerer level rounded down can be cast with the Subtle Spell Metamagic option at the price of no Sorcery Points, or with the Quickened Spell Metamagic option at the price of 1 Sorcery Point. Your Subtle and Quickened modifiers can be stacked at the price of 2 extra Sorcery Points.
Advanced Mental Spellcasting
At level 14 any spell can be cast with the Subtle Spell Metamagic option at the price of no Sorcery Points or with the Quickened Spell Metamagic option at the price of 1 Sorcery Point. Your Subtle and Quickened modifiers can be stacked at the price of 2 extra Sorcery Point.
Mental Casting Mastery
At level 18 any spell can be cast with the Subtle or the Quick Metamagic Option at the price of no Sorcery Points. Your Subtle and Quickened modifiers can be stacked at the price of 2 extra Sorcery Point.
Meditative Casting
Your intimate knowledge of the Arcane, and your ability to focus on the Weave to affect it allows you to stretch the possibilities of your innate spellcasting abilities.
Starting at level 3 you gain the ability to Meditate on a spell as if you were performing a Ritual, and are able to cast using the ritual option of spells that you know this way. This type of casting requires material components even if you use an arcane focus, but it does not require any verbal or somatic component, as if done under the Subtle Metamagic option. At levels 3, 6, 14, 18 you learn one extra spell from the Wizard spell list of a level up to one third your Sorcerer’s level rounded down (i.e. lv. 1, 2, 4, 6), that has the Ritual tag. These extra spells can only be cast using your Meditative Casting option and cannot be swapped during level-up.
