Voidlings

This is a race I am using in my “The Dark Edge of Midnight” campaign, and decided to post it here as well. It's not pretty, but I hope it brings people some joy, or horror, depending on how the Voidlings are used.

Personality

These creatures are from the depths of the Void; they are the embodiment of darkness and evil magic. This causes them to be very self-serving. Voidlings have absolutely no problems working with others or helping others, as long as it helps them meet their own goals. They detest all things to do with light and good and order, often going out of their way to see to the downfall of the things they hate most. The vile darkness that fills the Void has twisted these creatures into beings of nearly pure black magic; it is a force that constantly drives these mysterious outsiders.

Physical Description

Voidlings are vicious, agile, demon-like creatures. Their bodies are usually covered in a thick layer of dull, colorless, leathery skin, which is generally some tone of gray or white. This is due to the harshness of the Void, and the complete lack of light that resides within their home realm. A Voidling's face appears to be some version of a demon like creature. Two deep-set silvery red eyes glitter within the dark sockets they occupy. Their mouth, like something from a horror novel, is filled with two separate rows of vicious fangs on both the top and bottom jaws, with each row capable of moving independently. Due to the over-exposure of the vile magic that inhabits the Void, these twisted creatures can either have tufts of black hair, or patches of dark-colored feathers coating their thick skin. Though the face is often freakish enough, it's the unusually long razor-sharp claws at the end of each finger that often draws the most attention.

Relations

Voidlings have no problem at all working with other races and groups. They will do so as long as it ultimately meets their own goals. Most other races and groups are the ones who have problems with the Voidlings. Being creatures from the Void, these self-centered creatures are often labeled as monsters and demons, and get treated as such by other races when they meet. This leads to anger and conflicts between the Voidlings and others. But those that can manage to get past the nature of the Voidlings usually finds a reliable ally that can be useful in many situations, especially those dealing with the darker sides of magic.

Alignment

Voidlings are raised in the evil, the darkness, and the brutal environment within the Void. Mostly they are purpose-driven creatures, but often to selfish goals of being free of the Void. They don't necessarily wish for power or control, they just want to break the bonds that hold them and their kind within the Void. Because of this, they very rarely seek a good-based alignment. They will often work with other races and groups, as long as it brings them closer to their own goals and desires.

Lands

These vile creatures are born of the Void. They live in a land deprived of light and goodness. Voidlings shun the light and they often hate vibrant colors as well. They are fine dwelling within shadows and gray, mist-filled areas deep within swamps. The only time they venture forth from their hiding places, is when they have a goal to achieve, and even then they will avoid the light as much as possible.

Religion

Being as they were born from the Void, these creatures have very little need for religion. The idea is silly to them. They have been known to pledge themselves to an ideal or a concept when the need arrises, but they have no need for gods or demigods. In the Void, they were cursed and damned for eternity, and because of this the Voidlings despise all things to do with “divine” beings.

Language

The Voidlings communicate to one another with a series of squeals, barks, and hisses that sound like demon-possessed rodents. Other creatures call this language Scaothe, a common language within the Void. Voidlings, because of their long-lasting poisoning from eras of being exposed to the dark magic that fills the Void, can temporarily steal the spoken language of nearby intelligent creatures. They also have a unique ability to talk through people using a vile psychic power.

Names

Unless a Voidling has done something special to deserve earning a name, they are often referred by some moniker that describes them best. After many long eras within the Void, these creatures learned the value of not having names, as certain others within the Void could bend you to their will if they knew your name. So Voidlings ditched the idea of names all together, while a rare few under the service of more powerful creatures were given names due to special deeds they had done. It is extremely common to hear Voidlings refer to each other with names such as Black Button, Red Eye, Green Tooth, Squirrel Eater, Burned Feather, or Crooked Toe.

Racial Traits

  • +6 Dexterity, +4 Intelligence, −2 Strength, −4 Charisma: Voidlings are very quick and cunning.
  • Outsider (Shadow, Extraplanar): Voidlings are rare, as they must first escape the depths of the Void to walk among the humans and other races. This connection with the Void, and having been born within the darkness, gives the Voidlings many unique abilities not seen in any other race.
  • Outsider Traits : A Voidling begins with 2 levels of Outsider.
    • This grants them 2 HD (2d8) for Hit Points, +3 Fortitude, Reflex, and Will as base saving throws, and a +2 Base Attack Bonus.
    • Darkvision out to 120 Feet
    • Skill points equal to (8 + INT Modifier, minimum of 1), with quadruple skill points at 1st level
    • Skills of Balance, Bluff, Climb, Diplomacy, Disguise, Gather Information, Intimidate, Hide, Move Silently, Listen, and Spot.
    • Outsiders breathe, but do not need to eat or sleep (although they can do so if they wish).
    • Unlike most other living creatures, an outsider does not have a dual nature; its soul and body form one unit. When an outsider is slain, no soul is set loose. Spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don’t work on an outsider. It takes a different magical effect, such as limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection to restore it to life.
    • Proficient with simple and martial weapons and light armor.
  • Do to the voidlings repeated efforts to escape the void they receive a +4 bonus to hide checks, +4 bonus to move silently checks.
  • Voidlings base land speed is 40 feet: Also, the Voidlings can use their claws to climb at a speed equal to their base land speed.
  • Language Thief (Su): Whenever a Voidling is within 50 feet of an intelligent speaking creature, he can steal their language for 24 hours. This helps Voidlings blend into crowds and groups easier, and makes it easier to gather information among different races. Voidlings can only steal one language at a time, and if they steal more than one language in a 24-hour period, they automatically lose the previous language.
  • Puppet Talk (Sp): This unique abilitie is born into the Voidlings from over-exposure to the dark magic that dwells within the Void itself. This allows Voidlings to make another being talk for him using the victim's own language and voice. This is a spell-like ability that can be resisted by the target with a Will save. DC = Voidling's HD + intelligence Modifier + 10. The Voidling must be within 100 feet (+5 feet per HD) of the target, and may control his victim's voice and words for one hour per HD of the Voidling. The Voidling can also decide if he wishes for his target to remember what was spoken during this time, or if the victim should just have a blank spot for that time in his or her memory. The Voidling may use this a number of times per day equal to his HD.
  • Dark Health (Su): Due to eras of being exposed to the dark energy of the Void, the Voidlings have learned how to use the darkness and vile energy to heal. When exposed to shadows or darkness, a Voidling can regenerate at a rate equal to half of his HD (2d8) every two rounds, rounded up to the nearest fifth. Also, negative energy heals Voidlings when it would normally harm other creatures. The downfall to this, is that Voidlings take a −2 penalty to all rolls when exposed to bright, unfiltered light, such as pure sunlight or a daylight spell.
  • Void Born (Ex): Because of their inborn connection with the Void, Voidlings can detect gates, portals, creatures, and items that are also connected to the Void. This is similar to the Elves' ability to detect hidden doors, and also grants the Voidling a bonus skill of Knowledge (The Void) as a Racial Skill. Voidlings also get a +4 Bonus to identify any object or creature that is connected with the Void in any way.
  • Void Claws : Voidlings have large, razor-sharp claws at the end of each finger, which are natural weapons for them. These claws deal 3d4 points of damage, and causes negative energy-based damage equal to the Voidling's HD to any creature that isn't from the Void. When climbing, these claws also grant a +6 bonus to any climb check whenever they are used to dig into the surface the Voidling is climbing.
  • Automatic Languages: Scaothe is the common language of the Void. A Voidling with an Intelligence score higher than 12 knows Common. Bonus Languages: Infernal, Abyssal, Elven, Undercommon, Orc, Draconic, Ignan, Aquan, Avian.
  • Favored Class: Rogue or Illusionist.
  • Level Adjustment: +4
