Trooper Deacon[edit]

By Razir 6112

A well-balanced mix of cleric and fighter, they bring the best of both worlds into any campaign.

Making a Trooper Deacon[edit]

Abilities: Wisdom determines how powerful a spell Trooper Deacon can cast, how many spells he can cast per day, and how hard those spells are to resist. A high Constitution score improves hit points, which they need in their many battles. A high Charisma score improves his ability to turn undead. Strength is especially important because it improves their melee attack and damage rolls. Dexterity is important for those who want to be good archers or who want access to certain Dexterity-oriented feats.

Alignment: A Trooper Deacon’s alignment must be within one step of his deity’s (that is, it may be one step away on either the lawful–chaotic axis or the good-evil axis, but not both).

Starting Gold: 5d4 gp

Starting Age: Moderate.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Trooper Deacon.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A Trooper Deacon is proficient with all simple and martial weapons and with all armor (heavy, medium, and light) and shields (except tower shields).

Aura (Ex): A Trooper Deacon of a chaotic, evil, good, or lawful deity has a particularly powerful aura corresponding to the deity’s alignment (see the detect evil spell for details). Trooper Deacons who don’t worship a specific deity but choose the Chaotic, Evil, Good, or Lawful domain have a similarly powerful aura of the corresponding alignment.

Spells: Much like their Cleric brethren, a Trooper Deacon casts divine spells, which are drawn from the same cleric spell list. His alignment does not restrict him from casting certain spells that are opposed to his moral or ethical beliefs. To prepare or cast a spell, a Trooper Deacon must have a Wisdom score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a Trooper Deacon’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the Trooper Deacon’s Wisdom modifier. Like other spellcasters, a Trooper Deacon can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Wisdom score. A Trooper Deacon also gets one domain spell of each spell level he can cast, starting at 1st level. When a Trooper Deacon prepares a spell in a domain spell slot, it must come from one of his two domains. Trooper Deacon either meditates or prays for their spells, which must be 1 hour each day. This time spent effect whether a Trooper Deacon can regain his daily allotment of spells and prepare those spells. A Trooper Deacon may prepare and cast any spell on the cleric spell list, provided that he can cast spells of that level, but he must choose which spells to prepare during his daily meditation.

Deity, Domains, and Domain Spells: While the Trooper Deacons of a particular religion are united in their reverence for their deity, each emphasizes different aspects of the deity’s interests. Choose a deity for your Trooper Deacon, this deity influences his alignment, what magic he can perform, his values, and how others see him. If the typical worshipers of a deity include the members of a race, a Trooper Deacon must be of the indicated race to choose that deity as his own. When you have chosen an alignment and a deity, choose two domains given to clerics. Each domain gives your Trooper Deacon access to a domain spell at each spell level he can cast, from 1st on up, as well as a granted power. With access to two domain spells at any given spell level, the Trooper Deacons get the granted powers of both the domains selected and can prepare spells from one or the other each day in each of his domain spell slots. If a domain spell is not on the cleric spell list, a the Trooper Deacons can not prepare it only in his domain spell slot.

Spontaneous Casting: Any Trooper Deacon can trade any prepared spell that is not a domain spell in order to cast any cure spell of the same spell level or lower (a cure spell is any spell with “cure” in its name) or any protect spell of the same spell level or lower (a protection spell is any spell with “protection from” in its name).

Bonus Feats: At 1st level, a Trooper Descon gets a bonus combat-oriented feat in addition to the feat that any 1st-level character gets. The Trooper Deacon gains an additional bonus feat at the 2nd level and every two levels thereafter. These bonus feats must be drawn from the feats noted as fighter bonus feats. A Trooper Deacon must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including ability score and base attack bonus minimums. These bonus feats are in addition to the feat that a character of any class gets from advancing levels. A Trooper Deacon is not limited to the list of fighter bonus feats when choosing these feats.

Righteous Weapon: Trooper Deacon gains the Weapon Focus feat. If they already have this feat, they may choose any of the fighter bonus feats in its place.

Turn or Rebuke Undead (Su): Any Trooper Deacon has the power to affect undead creatures by channeling the power of his faith through his holy (or unholy) symbol. A good Trooper Deacon can turn or destroy undead creatures while an evil Trooper Deacon instead rebukes or commands such creatures. A neutral Trooper Deacon of a neutral deity must choose whether his turning ability functions as that of a good cleric or an evil cleric. Once this choice is made, it cannot be reversed. This decision also determines whether the Trooper Deacon can cast spontaneous cures or inflict spells (see above). A Trooper Deacon may attempt to turn undead a number of times per day equal to his Charisma modifier. A Trooper Deacon with 5 ranks in Knowledge (religion) gets a +2 bonus on turning checks against the undead (+3 bonus if he has 10 or more ranks in Knowledge (religion)).

Bonus Languages: At 3rd. 6th. and 9th level, Trooper Deacon gains one bonus language of their choice (Celestial, Abyssal, and Infernal).

Ex-Trooper Deacon[edit]

A Trooper Deacon who grossly violates the code of conduct required by his troops and/or god loses all spells and class features, except for armor and shield proficiencies and proficiency with simple weapons. He cannot thereafter gain levels as a Trooper until he atones.
