Talk:Medusa (5e Race)

Tried this race out in my game today. My main issues are... 1. Petrifying Gaze is very overpowered, but I'm honestly not sure what to do about it. Without a petrifying gaze, they're not a medusa, but it's just way too much. 2. Snakehair is poorly worded and confusing. Does it require an attack roll? If so, it should say so. I'm also not a fan of it being used up but being able to miss. But I guess that's normal. 3. Stoneskin's AC bonus is too low. Almost all racial natural armor traits give 13+whatever stat. If this is meant to be low to balance out Petrifying Gaze... that's not really how this is supposed to work. Knight9910 (talk) 18:45, 13 February 2022 (MST)

Oh, I just had an idea. What if we put Petrifying Gaze on a progression? Sort of like how some races like... will start with hovering, which then changes to them having Fly 1/rest at level 5 or whatever. In this case, the gaze would start just as restrain for one turn, be able to be stretched out to two turns at level 5, and then at level 11 it becomes Flesh To Stone 1/day. Something like that, maybe? Knight9910 (talk) 20:20, 13 February 2022 (MST)
The medrosakal had similar issues before the OP fixed them. It's about as playable as it can get, I guess.--Yanied (talk) 20:41, 13 February 2022 (MST)

The petrifying gaze could have a few fixes here. First, just do like the vampire race and mark that this is going to be unbalanced, and that it is meant to be that way, then just give the race the medusa's petrifying gaze (which unlike this version CAN turn you into stone, a natural weakness. Otherwise, I would not change it to flesh to stone (too long) but rather simply change the condition from restrained to something lesser such as a modified grapple which petrifies at three fails and restrains at 2 fails. Also, again, looking at your own reflection requires you to make the save. Potentially, you could also calculate the saving throw DC without an ability score or without the proficiency bonus.
