Monstrozoologist, Variant[edit]

A monstrozoologist is a scientist interested in researching and classifying various beasts, creatures, constructs, aberrations and all things monstrous. This could involve being a cloistered academic, pouring over books and learning what is known. Or this could involve being a field researcher, seeking new knowledge from monsters firsthand. What kind of scientist are they? Why have they become so obsessed with monsters that they would leave behind society? Are they hunters or protectors of society and need to know everything about their prey? Are they looking to master and control these types of beings? Or perhaps they need knowledge for a mission or simply personal interest. Whatever their reasoning may be, their knowledge would surely be useful in a battle.

Skill Proficiencies: Choose two: Animal Handling, Arcana, Investigation, or Nature

Languages: Choose one: Abyssal, Deep Speech, Giant, Goblin, Orc, or Primordial

Tool Proficiencies: Choose Two tool proficiencies, or one plus a musical instrument, or one plus an extra language from the above list.

Equipment: A bottle of black ink, a quill, a small knife, notepad w/ charcoal pencil, a set of common clothes, several (3-6) books about monsters,one musical instrument and a pouch containing 15 gp

Feature: Researcher[edit]

When you attempt to learn or recall a piece of lore, if you do not know that information, you often know where and from whom you can obtain it. Usually, this information comes from a library, scriptorium, university, or a sage or other learned person or creature. Your DM might rule that the knowledge you seek is secreted away in an almost inaccessible place, or that it simply cannot be found. Unearthing the deepest secrets of the multiverse can require an adventure or even a whole campaign.

Alternate Feature: Library Access[edit]

Though others must often endure extensive interviews and significant fees to gain access to even the most common archives in your library, you have free and easy access to the majority of the library, though it might also have repositories of lore that are too valuable, magical, or secret to permit anyone immediate access.

You have a working knowledge of your cloister’s personnel and bureaucracy, and you know how to navigate those connections with some ease.

Additionally, you are likely to gain preferential treatment at other libraries across the Realms, as professional courtesy shown to a fellow scholar.

Use the tables for the sage background below as the basis for your traits and motivations, modifying the entries when appropriate to suit your identity as a monstrozoologist.

Your bond is almost certainly associated either with the place where you grew up or with the knowledge you hope to acquire through adventuring. Your ideal is no doubt related to how you view the quest for monstrozoological knowledge—perhaps as a worthy goal in itself, or maybe as a means to a desirable end.
