Magic Item Restrictions?[edit]

Can I put more than 1 magic item on my characters arm slot i.e: Shield of Protection and Bracers of Mighty Striking. And can i put multiple magical bonuses on a weapon or piece of armor?

I would like to start by saying, please try to keep page titles a little bit shorter. For more detail you can simply add a longer description underneath. To answer your question; yes you can use more than one, but only when it is logical. Meaning, bracers would be worn on both arms, so you could not have Bracers of Mighty Striking and Bracers of Protection +1 equiped at once. However you could equipe two magical shields at once, as they only take one hand to wield (however you would not have a hand to use your weapon).

To answer your question, yes you can have multiple magical bonuses on a weapon or peice of armor, they stack. Thats how you get +2 - +5 bonuses. :D If your trying to make a +3 weapon by paying 6, 000 gold and having 3 +1 bonuses, then no sorry, you can't. But then again, it depends on your DM, perhaps you could pull it off... :P

Just as a side note, I play 3.5e, so if you play another edition there may be specific rules for this I am not aware of. As a second side note, if you're not playing 3.5e then you're not playing DnD (I'm kidding, I like 3.5e, but I won't stop you from playing an inferior edition, so don't get mad. :P)

You get 1 arm slot. That can be filled with any 1 item. Shields, if I recall, don't count as an arm slot, but rather as held items. A humanoid-shaped body can wear magic gear consisting of one item from each of the following groups:

  • One headband, hat, helmet, or phylactery on the head
  • One pair of eye lenses or goggles on or over the eyes
  • One amulet, brooch, medallion, necklace, periapt, or scarab around the neck
  • One vest, vestment, or shirt on the torso
  • One robe or suit of armor on the body (over a vest, vestment, or shirt)
  • One belt around the waist (over a robe or suit of armor)
  • One cloak, cape, or mantle around the shoulders (over a robe or suit of armor)
  • One pair of bracers or bracelets on the arms or wrists
  • One glove, pair of gloves, or pair of gauntlets on the hands
  • One ring on each hand (or two rings on one hand)
  • One pair of boots or shoes on the feet

Also, yes you can put multiple enchantments on any one item. A player (who really hates plants), for example, could own a +1 flaming plant-bane longsword (costing 18,315gp). You can even upgrade the enhancements after item creation by paying the difference in item cost. For example, you could add the ghost touch property to +2 wild leather armor (costing 39,000gp).

For simplicity's sake, check out the last page (I think) of the Magic Item Compendium released by Wizards of the Coast. It may even be available for free via pdf download on their website. Anyways, what it is is a simple humanoid figure outline with the various magic item slots highlighted, as well as a place to write what is occupying each slot. Great addition to any character sheet.
