WIP Campaign Settings[edit]
I feel that the best campaign settings follow the precedents set by Thunder Rift and Ghostwalk:
- Give the DM room to work. No comprehensive, universe-spanning atlas style maps. Make maps only of those areas that are essential to the setting. The same goes for cultures.
- Respect the game you're playing. Do not re-make or replace the core material; build on top of it.
- Create a recipe for imagination. Build themes, flavors, and styles more than anything else. Make rules and content only as absolutely necessary to facilitate those, or as example.
- Let people dream. Ask many questions, leave many secrets, give no answers.
- Give players room to play. Fill the world with unresolved problems, from the inane, to the apocalyptic.
- Versatility is key. Make it like a PC game expansion; you can just plug it in at any table and it will work- even in coordination with other settings.
- Lay the guts bare. Compartmentalize its elements. Make it modular. Make it so that people can take it apart, repurpose it, tinker and tweak the elements, use it as they see fit.
