After all, monsters get so many cool abilities, and who wouldn't want to be a {{5g|Adult Red Dragon|dragon}}?</ins></div></td></tr>

For relatively simple or low-challenge humanoid monsters lacking powerful abilities such as {{5h|r|Gnoll}}s, there are usually no problems and they can be turned into a race just fine. However, the more powerful the monster, the more issues of balance and playability compound. A {{5g|Medusa}} is humanoid-shaped, but their always-on ability to petrify creatures (compare {{5g|Flesh to Stone}}, a 5th-level spell that a 9th level wizard can cast one time per long rest) is far too powerful to grant at lower levels. Thus, if you restrict your adaptation solely to a race page, you'd have to nerf it to oblivion and essentially get rid of the coolest part of playing that monster.</ins></div></td></tr>

<tr><td colspan="2"> </td><td class='diff-marker'>+</td><td style="color: #202122; font-size: 88%; border-style: solid; border-width: 1px 1px 1px 4px; border-radius: 0.33em; border-color: #a3d3ff; vertical-align: top; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div><ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">However, there are some solutions. For an otherwise easily-adaptable monster with a stand-out ability (such as Petrifying Gaze), you can make available a racial {{5g|Feat}} on that page that "unlocks" that ability. However, care must be taken even with this unlocked ability, as some monster abilities are still too strong and must be nerfed or otherwise redesigned in some way. Players should never get abilities that recharge every turn on a die roll, for example.</ins></div></td></tr>

In the olden editions, it was often recommended for DMs willing to let players play a monstrous character to split the monster's abilities across class levels. On DanDwiki, these are called [[:Category:Composite Character|composite characters]], and they are a combination of a class and race.</ins></div></td></tr>
